Detroit’s legacy businesses keep the city’s history alive every day. 💜

Melia Howard talks with Lauren Stovall of Hot Sam’s Detroit about the stories that live inside businesses that have served Detroit for generations.

Those stories stay part of the city when people continue to know these places, support them, and pass their significance along.

Detroit Legacy Weekend, Sept. 18–20, is an opportunity to spend time with businesses that have helped shape the city and understand why their presence still means so much today.

Labor Day recognizes the time and skill people contribute across Detroit each day. 💜

For example, our employees use their expertise to monitor the People Mover system and maintain the trains, helping riders travel safely through downtown.

We’re deeply grateful to our team and to all workers across the city who keep things moving and growing. Happy Labor Day!

Detroit Month of Design is underway, produced by Design Core Detroit, the steward of Detroit’s UNESCO City of Design designation. 🚄

Public transit fits the 2026 theme, Design Moves the Future, because thoughtful station access and connections between services can make downtown travel easier and support local business.

Transit design is on display in this great photo from Saad Y. We appreciate you including the People Mover in your Detroit photography!

Beginning September 18, the People Mover / DTC will launch the first phase of a major renovation at Water Square Station, its first significant upgrade since the Joe Louis Arena era.

Through December 21:
• Station ramps will be closed to passengers and pedestrians.
• Riders may access the platform using the ADA-accessible station elevator or the south Exit Stairwell.
• Riverfront Apartments and Condominiums residents entering from Level 2 should use the north stairwell across from the pedestrian crosswalk. The elevator will not stop on Level 2.

The renovation will improve the station’s infrastructure, lighting, surfaces, safety and appearance as Water Square evolves from an arena destination into a neighborhood station serving residents, visitors and western downtown.

Construction is expected to continue through early March 2027.

If your downtown plans include historic buildings and the riverfront, Financial District Station is a practical place to start.

Melia Howard features the stop in Melia’s Moving People and explains how its location keeps both within walking distance. 👣

Exit at Financial District Station and continue the rest of your outing on foot.

A little planning can make a busy Labor Day weekend downtown much easier. 🅿️

The Detroit Jazz Festival starts today at Hart Plaza, so expect lots of music and fun, plus extra foot and vehicle traffic!

Consider parking near a People Mover station away from the busiest blocks, then take the train to Financial District Station for convenient access to the festival.
