A two-car job from Redworth Hall today 🚕🚕

We collected a group of 8 who had been attending a wedding at Redworth Hall and took them back to Darlington Train Station for their journey home.

It gave us a good opportunity to have both Mazdas out together — particularly useful for larger groups who want to travel at the same time without having to split their plans around different taxis.

Redworth Hall is a lovely setting for a wedding as well. The building and grounds are beautiful, and it’s one of those places we’re always happy to get a booking to.

If you’re attending a wedding, staying at one of the hotels around Darlington or need transport between your hotel and Darlington Station, we’re happy to arrange the journey in advance.

A late one at Headlam Hall Tuesday night.

We were booked to collect a lady arriving from Holland into Newcastle Airport and take her down to Headlam Hall. Her flight landed at 10:10pm, but unfortunately her luggage had gone missing and it was around 11:20pm before she finally made it out of the airport.

Not the nicest way to start a visit, but we were still there waiting for her when she came through and got her down to Headlam Hall for the night.

We’re picking her up again today for the return journey to Newcastle Airport. She mentioned she’d like to see some of the area while she’s here, so I’ve offered to take her back via a more scenic route through the countryside and over the Pennines rather than just taking the quickest road back.

One of the things I enjoy about doing these longer pre-booked journeys is meeting people visiting the North East from different parts of the world and, when we’ve got the time, being able to show them a little bit of the area rather than just getting from A to B.

And I have to say, Headlam Hall looks pretty impressive lit up on a night.

After doing a trial run with two cars to see if it was worthwhile, we decided to stick with it and invest in something a bit more comfortable and practical for our customers.

We’ve now got the Mazda 6 saloon and Mazda 6 estate, which gives us a bit more flexibility depending on what our customers need.

The saloon is ideal for most everyday journeys, while the estate gives us plenty of extra luggage space for airport runs, station transfers, walking trips and anyone travelling with larger cases or equipment.

If you’re booking with us, you’re welcome to ask for either car. Or just let us know how many people are travelling and roughly what luggage you’re bringing and we’ll make sure we send the most suitable one.

Both have had a good clean and are ready to go. It’s nice to finally have the pair together!

When I started Harry’s Taxis, there were very few viable independent taxi firms around. The big companies had huge advertising budgets, established brands and years of experience behind them.

For me, this was a complete Hail Mary.

My goal for the first year wasn’t to become the biggest or the busiest. It was simply to survive.

If I’m honest, despite wanting it to succeed more than anything, I’ve always been a bit of a pessimist. I genuinely expected it to fail.

Those early days were incredibly hard. Trying to find the right market, getting the name out there, creating systems, building routines and learning how to run a business from the ground up. Every day felt like another lesson.

Fast forward to today, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built.

We now have a fantastic team, and something I’m equally proud of is the network of independent local taxi businesses we’ve built relationships with. Every one of them is on their journeys on the challenges of running a business as I am.

Running a business isn’t easy. It’s stressful, demanding and, at times, completely thankless. But it’s also rewarding, exciting and one of the biggest personal challenges you’ll ever take on.

When I first started, I heard plenty of comments like:

• “You’ll never make it work.”
• Other drivers saying “You’ll only give everyone else the rubbish jobs while you keep the best ones.”

In the last few weeks we didn’t have any availability for one of our regular customers so we reached out to Bex and she took our regular to Scotland and as of late c&p were off to stand-stead in London.

Thankfully, the people around me know that’s never been what Harry’s Taxis is about.

It turned into a bit of a different day yesterday. Harry from Harrys Taxi - Darlington gave me a ring on the morning asking if I fancied a run from Teesside Airport to Stansted Airport. He’d been out most of the night doing airport work and knew another seven-hour round trip wasn’t the safest thing to take on.

Fair play to him for recognising that.

I think that’s one thing people don’t always see. Independent taxi firms aren’t always competing with each other. Sometimes we’re helping each other out to make sure customers still get where they need to be safely.

The customer had a comfortable journey, managed to grab something to eat and even had a bit of sleep on the way down.

It’s easy to think this job is just about driving, but sometimes it’s about making the right decision for the customer, even if that means passing a job on to someone else.

One thing I enjoy about this job is seeing the variety of places people visit.

Tonight’s journey was from Darlington Station to The Morritt Arms near Barnard Castle for a regular customer working in the area.

Some weeks it’s airports, some weeks weddings, and other times it’s visitors heading out into the countryside after arriving by train.

The Morritt Arms always looks particularly nice when the lights come on in the evening.

A quick trip out to Middleton Lodge.

This time it was three gentlemen visiting for a conference, but over the last few months we’ve met wedding guests, business travellers, walkers and people visiting North Yorkshire for a relaxing break.

One of the best parts of the job is hearing everyone’s story and seeing some of the fantastic places we have right on our doorstep.

Middleton Lodge never disappoints. A beautiful setting whatever the weather.

One of the best parts of this job is meeting people who are visiting our area for the first time.

Earlier this week I picked up a gentleman from Darlington Station and took him up to Reeth to start his Coast to Coast walk. The following day I was back at the station collecting his wife and taking her to The Buck Inn so they could meet up and continue the adventure together.

It always amazes me how many people travel from all over the country to visit places like Reeth and the Yorkshire Dales. Living locally, we sometimes forget how lucky we are to have these places right on our doorstep.

🏰 Another station transfer to Walworth Castle Hotel this week.

We recently collected a couple arriving by train for an activity holiday in the area and transported them directly to the hotel to start their stay.

Walworth Castle is a fantastic base for exploring County Durham, but transport options can sometimes be limited if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
