MEC DIALE-TLABELA WARNS AGAINST ILLEGAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT OPERATIONS
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has called on prospective public transport operators to comply with legal requirements before entering the industry.
The MEC says applicants must first obtain an Operating Licence in line with the National Land Transport Act before purchasing vehicles intended for public transport use.
According to the Department, there has been a growing trend of individuals buying vehicles without approval and later operating illegally after their applications are declined.
Diale-Tlabela says the issue goes beyond procedure and impacts the safety, regulation and sustainability of the public transport system.
She says Operating Licences are granted based on factors such as demand, compliance and proper planning.
The MEC further emphasised that the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity has the authority to approve or reject applications depending on route demand and existing operations.
She warned that purchasing vehicles before approval often leads to illegal operations, conflict within the industry and challenges for law enforcement authorities.
The Department has urged applicants to follow the correct process by first applying for an Operating Licence, awaiting approval from the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity, and only purchasing a vehicle once a grant letter has been issued.
Diale-Tlabela says compliance with the process will help protect commuters and operators while ensuring fairness and stability within the transport sector.
The Department says it will continue with awareness campaigns and enforcement measures aimed at addressing non-compliance and restoring order in the public transport industry.-
