Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) is an eco-friendly propulsion support system that harnesses wind power to assist a vessel’s movement. Its wing-shaped structure generates lift, similar to that of an aircraft wing, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

Depending on operating conditions, the system is expected to deliver fuel savings of up to 5–20%, which can reduce carbon emissions and support compliance with increasingly stringent global environmental regulations.

- has expanded the onboard battery capacity of to 12.6 MWh from 2.2 MWh, making it the largest marine battery installation to date on a RoPax vessel in service, through the installation of AYK Energy’s Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries.

The vessel’s drydocking works were carried out at Turku Repair Yard, one of BLRT Repair Yards, members of BLRT Grupp, contributing its respective expertise to the project.

From the initial planning of Wasaline’s AURORA BOTNIA, the company set the target of achieving fully carbon-neutral operations by 2030 — something that will be achieved well ahead of time due to a recently signed biogas contract with Gasum and a FuelEU Maritime pooling agreement with Stena Line, the latter of which also acquired Wasaline in November last year with closing expected to take place at the beginning of this year.

AURORA BOTNIA is equipped with and 12.6 MWh batteries, and it uses electric-powered Azimuth thrusters. The new battery upgrade expected to further cut use by approximately 10,000 MWh annually.

Built at Rauma Marine Constructions, the hybrid RoPax ferry AURORA BOTNIA entered service on 28 August 2021.
