Before integration… before equal access… before opportunity was guaranteed — there was The Safe Bus Company.

Founded in 1926 right here in Winston-Salem, The Safe Bus Company was a Black-owned transportation service created because African Americans were denied equal transportation. For nearly five decades, it didn’t just move passengers — it moved a community forward.

It transported workers to jobs.
It carried students toward education.
It helped families stay connected.
It created Black jobs, Black leadership, and Black economic power.

Today, that legacy still matters.

Black-owned transportation businesses continue to serve our seniors, individuals with disabilities, workers, and families — often filling gaps that others overlook. Supporting Black-owned transportation isn’t just about a ride.

It’s about:
✔️ Economic empowerment
✔️ Community stability
✔️ Local job creation
✔️ Preserving a powerful legacy

This Black History Month, let’s remember that mobility is opportunity — and who owns the wheels matters.

When you support Black-owned transportation services, you help drive our community forward.

What is micro-transit?

Micro-transit fills the gap between public transportation and traditional ride services. It provides reliable, scheduled transportation designed to meet real community needs—especially for medical appointments and essential services.
Support Systems of Forsyth County provides safe, dependable transportation so individuals can focus on what matters most: their health and well-being.

Reflecting back on yesterday’s panel discussion, I was asked:

Where do you see people falling through the cracks, and how does transportation become a turning point?

I thought about this program Support Systems provided transportation for this past summer. I think about how this program wasn’t funded for more support. Some of you will be able to zoom into this photo and see my stance on not only the importance of supporting and funding meaningful programs and how transportation is a catalyst for success.

How partnership with organizations, resources, and small businesses result in true impact and how the lack of these ingredients result in devastation and loss of opportunity.

Some of you will not make that connection. I would love to share some of these stories and connect some dots for you and our communities.
