With a major winter storm heading towards the NW, we would like to remind everyone to be safe out there.
Driving a semi in snowy conditions can be challenging.
Here are some quick safety tips to help semi drivers stay safe:
* Slow Down: Snow and ice can drastically reduce traction. Reduce your speed to maintain better control, even on highways.
*Increase Following Distance: Allow extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Stopping distances are longer in snowy or icy conditions.
Use Low Beams: Snow can reduce visibility. Use low-beam headlights, even during the day, to improve your visibility.
*Avoid Sudden Movements: Sudden acceleration, braking, or steering can cause loss of control. Make all movements smoothly and gradually.
*Keep the Fuel Tank Full: Cold temperatures can cause condensation in a half-empty fuel tank, potentially causing fuel line freeze-ups.
*Check the Weather: Stay informed about the weather conditions along your route and adjust your plan accordingly. Consider stopping if conditions become too severe.
*Monitor Tire Pressure: Cold temperatures can cause tires to lose air. Check tire pressure regularly to ensure you're driving on properly inflated tires.
*Use Chains If Necessary: In certain areas, you may be required to use tire chains. Always carry them and know how to install them when necessary.
*Keep Windows Clean: Snow can quickly accumulate on mirrors and windows. Keep your windows and mirrors clear for maximum visibility.
*Be Prepared for Icy Bridges: Bridges freeze faster than roads, so slow down as you approach them, even if the road appears clear.
*Avoid Cruise Control: Do not use cruise control in snow, as you need full control of your speed and reactions in changing conditions.
Stay safe and take your time to ensure your own safety and that of others on the road.
