City of Santa Monica Big Blue Bus Providing 13 million safe, reliable, & sustainable trips each year within 56 sq miles of Santa Monica and West Los Angeles.

Big Blue Bus is a City of Santa Monica department, governed by Santa Monica’s City Council. Big Blue Bus’s service area spans more than 58 square miles of greater Los Angeles and its 189 buses provide rides to more than 16 million people each year. Service is funded via farebox revenues and a variety of county, state and federal subsidies. No monies from the City’s general fund are used by Big Blue Bus.

Monday September 7, 2026, Big Blue Bus will operate a weekend schedule in observance of Labor Day. Customer Service and Blue: The Transit Store will be closed. Normal hours of operation will resume Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Routes 5, 15, 16, 41, 44, and Rapid 10 and will not be in service.

MODE service and the MODE Call Center will be unavailable on Monday September 7, 2026.

Santa Monica is moving toward a fully electric City of Santa Monica Big Blue Bus fleet by 2032, and ChargePoint and Eaton are helping power the transition.

As part of the City’s $56 million investment in electric transit infrastructure, Big Blue Bus plans to deploy 130 DC fast charging ports, exclusively featuring ChargePoint Express Plus equipment powered by Eaton.

The collaboration brings together ChargePoint’s high-power charging solutions and fleet software with Eaton’s electrical infrastructure and energy management expertise to support reliable operations today and scale for the future.

For more than 10 million Big Blue Bus rides each year, this is what transportation electrification at scale looks like.
