For the second year in a row, Pashaâs San Francisco Bay Area Employee Community Action Team spent the day volunteering along the Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline in Oakland â helping care for a place thatâs closely tied to both our operations and the surrounding communities.
Working alongside the East Bay Regional Park District, our team rolled up their sleeves to remove trash that had accumulated along the shoreline. Pasha volunteers collected more than 25 bags of trash, helping to restore the shoreline and reduce risks to local wildlife and habitats. Much of it was micro trash â tiny fragments of plastic, foam, wrappers, and degraded packaging materials. These small pieces of trash are easy to miss but pose a serious risk to wildlife, as birds and other animals often mistake them for food. Once ingested, microplastics can harm animalsâ health and persist in the environment for decades, making early removal critical.
While large debris is visible, removing micro trash helps prevent it from breaking down further, spreading through the food web, and impacting ecosystems beyond the shoreline. Every small piece picked up contributes to healthier habitats and a more resilient Bay.
The experience reinforced how local action can have meaningful environmental benefits, even in the face of broader pollution challenges.
Beyond the visible impact, the day was a great opportunity to come together as colleagues, spend time outdoors, and contribute to the long-term health of the Bay.
Weâre proud to return to this shoreline cleanup two years in a row and hope to continue this effort in the years ahead. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to help keep our shoreline clean.
