• For much of the country, the work week comes to an end on a rainy, stormy note.

• Today's weather will primarily be shaped by high pressure systems over the Desert Southwest along with the Upper Midwest and into the Mid-Atlantic, while the rest of the country faces rain and thunderstorms shaped by multiple systems of low pressure.

• Throughout the day, sporadic showers and thunderstorms can be anticipated throughout the Southeastern U.S. and Great Plains, extending into the Intermountain West and Pacific Northwest. In the West, the tallest peaks of the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and Rocky Mountains even could pick up some wet snow or a mix of rain and snow, particularly in Nevada and the Northwest portion of Wyoming.

• Flooding remains a risk, especially in the Southeast U.S. and Pacific Northwest, after several rainy days with more rain on the way. The best chance for floods will be found along rivers, creeks, and streams as well as urban and low-lying areas. If you do approach a flooded roadway, remember that it is always best to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

• Meanwhile, in New England, clear and partly cloudy skies early in the day will be replaced with scattered showers in the afternoon and evening hours.

• Additionally, the Upper Midwest and Mid-Atlantic will continue to have a break from the rain, where clear and partly cloudy skies can be expected.

• Temperatures across much of the Northwestern U.S will remain unseasonably warm, while the Southwest, Upper Midwest, Ohio Valley, and the Northeast U.S. will be unseasonably cool.

• Thunderstorms will form today across the Columbia River Basin of Washington and Oregon as increasing surface moisture combines with a disturbance aloft and daytime heating, with some severe storms and localized heavy rain possible.

• A broad disturbance found over the West Coast will cause showers and thunderstorms across portions of central California northward into Washington. Even snow will fall in the Sierra Nevadas, but as instability increases as the day goes on, thunderstorm coverage will increase. The strongest storms will be capable of producing gusty winds and hail

• The middle of the week will continue to be stormy for the majority of the U.S. as multiple cold fronts persist.

• Today’s main weather story continues to be a cold front stretching from central Texas to the southern Midwest and extending into the Mid-Atlantic. Another cold front extends from southern California up to northern Montana, where an additional cold front clips the north-central U.S. into New England.

• Showers and thunderstorms will be alongside each cold front. The southern Midwest, Southeast and south-central U.S. along with the Mid-Atlantic can expect scattered rain and thunderstorms throughout the day.

• After several days of rainy weather across many of these areas, the soil is especially saturated. The additional rain will likely trigger concerns for flooding, with the best chance found along rivers, creeks, and streams as well as urban and low-lying areas. If you do approach a flooded roadway, remember that it is always best to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

• Additionally, severe thunderstorms will be possible in the Mid-Atlantic. The greatest chance of dangerous storms will be in Northern Virginia, along with Southern Maryland and Delaware. The main concerns associated with these thunderstorms will be damaging winds and hail.

• Scattered showers will be seen in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. The tallest peaks of the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and Rocky Mountains could pick up some wet snow or a mix of rain and snow.

• More spotty showers are expected throughout much of the northern Plains throughout the day and New England in the afternoon and evening hours, while the Desert Southwest is expected to remain dry.

• The main weather story today will continue to be an elongated cold front stretched from the southern Rockies and south-central U.S. into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. At the same time, there will be two other cold fronts impacting the nation. One will clip the north-central U.S., while the other advances across the Northwest.

• Rain and thunderstorms will be found along each cold front. The Tennessee Valley and Southeast into the south-central U.S. as well as Northwest can expect rain and thunderstorms throughout the day. Any rain or storms in the Mid-Atlantic, northern Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley, Great Basin and northern California will largely be limited to the afternoon and evening.

• However, not all spots will see rain today. The tallest peaks of the Cascades, Sierra Nevada and Rockies could be cold enough for wet snow or a rain/snow mix, best chance early and late in the day.

• Throughout the Southeast and south-central U.S., slow-moving and repeated rounds of heavy to very heavy rain will be expected. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches will be common, with locally higher amounts possible. After several days of rainy weather, soils are already extremely saturated, so any additional rain will likely trigger concerns for flooding. The best chance of flooding will be found along rivers, creeks and streams as well as urban and low-lying areas. If you do approach a flooded roadway, remember that it is always best to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

• In addition to the flooding rains, strong to severe thunderstorms will be a possibility in a few areas. The greatest chance of dangerous storms will occur in the southern High Plains during the afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and large to very large hail will be the main concerns within thunderstorms. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out. A few gusty thunderstorms could develop in the northern Rockies and the Upper Mississippi Valley.

• Spotty showers could arrive in the interior Northeast in the late afternoon and evening. Otherwise, dry weather will prevail across the Northeast. Southern California and the Desert Southwest will also remain free of precipitation under high pressure.
