Congrats to our very own Charlie B! 🖤🤍
The Dairy Farm Support Person honors a person who supports dairy farmers with their knowledge and expertise. This award is open to a wide range of people including veterinarians, nutritionists, agronomists, employees, etc.
This year’s recipient goes to a man known by many as “Charlie B.” Charlie Bergfeld was born in 1938 and raised in Peosta. He was the son of Albert and Annie Bergfeld, who were farmers. Farming has been in his blood his entire life and still is to this day. He married the love of his life, Jeannie (Emma Jean) in 1960. Together they raised three children - Rick, Ronda, and Kevin.
In 1974, Charlie and Jeannie bought a milk route from Art Blofield of Coggon; and the following year a second route from Louie Rateshek of Clinton. He then added his first employee, Tom Silver from Central City, and had two milk trucks on the road. Over the years, they built Bergfeld Trucking into a large family-owned milk hauling business with the help of their two sons Rick and Kevin. They grew to having seventeen milk trucks and tankers on the road, hauling over one million pounds of milk a day to the dairy. Along with Charlie’s sons, the business also added more family employees over the years as some of the grandchildren began to get involved. Shannan began working for the company in 2007 as an office bookkeeper when Jeannie was ready for her well-deserved retirement. Kyle and Dane also joined the company as milk haulers in 2013 after years and years of riding in the passenger seat with their fathers.
Three generations later, and over 50 years of business, Charlie just recently retired in January from the milk hauling industry.
When asked to share some words about Charlie, here is what a long-time customer and friend Dick Kleis had to say:
“Carole and I have known Charlie ever since we were teenages. Now, we are in our 80’s so that is a LONG time! One day, shortly after he started hauling milk, Charlie came to our house with Wilbur to see if we would like to sell our milk to Wapsie Valley Creamery. That was about 47 years ago. We knew nothing about Wapsie Valley, but we knew Charlies so we gave it a try. It turned out to be a great decision. Three times during that span of years, he and Rick brought us water in their milk truck when we ran out. In all those years, we never had to dumb milk down the drain - even for a snow storm. Every year, Charlie and his family welcome all his friends and customers (which there are many) to his farm for his birthday party. We sold our cows two years ago and now he hauls our corn. Congratulations to a great guy!” From Dick, Carole, and Steve Kleis
Charlie has met so many wonderful people in the dairy industry, and although most are retired, he still continues to maintain some wonderful friendships with them! His family is SO proud of his work ethic and many accomplishments over the years, as he turned 87 later this year!
Please join us in congratulating Charlie Bergfeld on receiving this year's Dairy Farm Support Person Award. Thank you for your many years of knowledge and expertise in the dairy industry Charlie!
