Registration opens today for our Teens Biking to Destinations Summer Program!

Our Teens Biking to Destinations (TBD) program teaches youth basic bicycle safety, handling skills, and maintenance through hands-on activities and group rides on neighborhood streets. TBD aims to provide a foundation for youth in their growth on and off the bike. To better equip participants, those who complete the program will receive a brand-new bike, helmet, lock, and set of lights.

In partnership with Lacey Parks and Recreation, we are offering a summer session for youth ages 12 to 14, July 21-25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the White House at Woodland Creek Community Park. Registration is free through Lacey Parks and Recreation. This class is open to youth who have not already participated in our TBD program.

Our TBD program is funded with a grant from WSDOT and is administered by Cascade Bicycle Club. The funding comes from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act. The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Information about the CCA is available at www.climate.wa.gov.

Registration for our new youth summer Basic Bike Maintenance Class opens April 28!

Over four classes youth aged 11-15 will learn essential steps of performing a basic bike tune-up. Over the course of the week, participants will become familiar with the parts of a bike, the names and uses of common bike tools, and the skills necessary to keep a bike running smoothly and safely. During class participants will work on a used bicycle provided by Walk N Roll. At the end of the class, students will get to keep the bike they worked on along with a helmet, lock, and set of lights! On Friday, students will put their hard work into practice with a lesson on bicycle safety and handling skill. For the lesson students will ride their very own newly tuned-up bicycle! The Basic Bike Maintenance Class is held July 8-11 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Walk N Roll Educational Bike Shop. Register through Olympia Parks and Recreation.

Classes are free and held the second Tuesday of the month from 5 to 7 or 8 p.m. (depending on the class topic) at the Walk N Roll Educational Bike Shop. No registration is required, and you are welcome to attend one or all of the classes in the series. Classes are all ages; youth under 13 need to be accompanied by an adult. There is still room in our April 3 DIY Bike Repair Night! We offer DIY Bike Repair Nights the first Thursday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m. Community members can schedule to come to the Walk N Roll Educational Bike Shop to work on their personal bikes. Participants will have access to professional stands, tools and the knowledge and assistance of Walk N Roll’s bike mechanic volunteers and bicycle mechanic educator.

This is an opportunity to learn how to work on your own bike. We won’t work on it for you, instead we will help you learn while YOU fix your bike. If you are comfortable working alone, you are welcome to use the space and tools independently.

If you would like to reserve a spot at a DIY Repair Night, please email us at [email protected] for more information.
