🌼 WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAYS — Week 4: Mountain Laurel 🌼

We saved this one for last because Mountain Laurel doesn’t just mark a season, it marks a transition. When these spectacular blooms appear, it means summer has truly arrived. And that fills us with an almost embarrassing amount of joy. 🌞

Native to the East Coast and iconic to the Northeast, Mountain Laurel is the state flower of both Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and if you’ve ever stood in a grove of it in full bloom at Minnewaska State Park, breathing in that extraordinary fragrance, you understand exactly why. It is one of the great sensory experiences of the Northeast outdoors, full stop.

Those clusters of pink and cream blooms are actually individual flowers working together, creating the impression of one spectacular burst of color. Mountain Laurel is also an evergreen, it never sheds its leaves, an adaptation that allows it to thrive in the thin, rocky soils where other plants struggle. Tough, beautiful, and perfectly at home in the places we love most

🌼 WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAYS — Week 3: Dutchman’s Breeches 🌼

Every spring, spotting these for the first time gives us a little thrill.

Delicate, distinctive, and utterly charming — Dutchman’s Breeches dangle their puffy white blooms with yellow tips like tiny pairs of trousers hung out to dry. The name comes from their resemblance to the billowy pantaloons worn by early Dutch settlers, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it. 👖

But our favorite nickname? “Staggerweed.”

As a relative of the poppy, Dutchman’s Breeches contain alkaloids that have been known to make cows and other animals a little... unsteady on their feet if they eat too much. Nature, you never cease to amaze us.

Like so many of the wildflowers we’ve featured this month, Dutchman’s Breeches relies on ants to spread its seeds — a process called myrmecochory, which is essentially a fancy word for bribing an ant with a snack to carry your seeds somewhere new. (The ant snack strikes again!)

And for the butterflies among us — these beautiful blooms are pollinated by our winged friends, making them a welcome sight for pollinators emerging in early spring. 🦋

One more Wednesday to go — and with it, your chance to win a free day hike for 2. The quiz drops next week. Have you been paying attention? 😊

🌼 WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAYS — Week 2: The Trillium Twins 🌼

This week we’re celebrating two of the most photogenic, most beloved, and frankly most *fascinating* wildflowers in the spring forest — Red Trillium and Painted Trillium.

Elegant. Striking. And full of surprises.

Let’s start with Red Trillium, also known — and we are not making this up — as “Stinky Benjamin” and “Wakerobin.” That deep, gorgeous red hue? It’s actually an elaborate disguise. Red Trillium mimics the color and odor of rotting flesh to attract carrion flies, which unwittingly carry pollen from flower to flower while searching for their next meal. Nature is endlessly clever. 🪰

But it gets better. Both species produce seeds with a nutritious little treat attached to the outside — the elaiosome — which lures ants into carrying the seeds off and dispersing them. Scientists actually call this treat the “ant snack.” Seriously. By scientists. We love this so much.

And Red Trillium has one more trick: it’s also known as “Birthroot,” long used in traditional medicine to induce labor, thanks to the sapogenins found in the plant.

Painted Trillium, its equally stunning sibling, brings a delicate white bloom with a vivid magenta center — one of the true showstoppers of the spring forest.

Keep your eyes open on the trail — and keep following along each Wednesday. The quiz — and your chance to win a free hike for 2 — is coming. 😉

🌼 WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAYS — Week 1: The Trout Lily 🌼
Meet one of our absolute favorite harbingers of spring.

Graceful, nodding, almost shy, the Trout Lily sends up a single golden bloom that is often among the very first wildflowers to greet us each year. And we mean *first*, these determined little beauties have been known to push right up through melting snow cover.

Look closely at those distinctive mottled leaves and you’ll immediately understand the name: they’re a near-perfect match for the markings of a brook trout. 🐟

But here’s where it gets really interesting. The Trout Lily is pollinated entirely by ants - it blooms too early to rely on winged pollinators! It can take up to 7 years after germination before it blooms for the first time. Seven years of patient, underground work for one perfect flower. We think that’s kind of beautiful.

And patient is an understatement. Trout Lilies also spread through underground shoots off their bulbs, forming colonies that can live for up to 300 years. Some of the patches you pass on the trail this spring have been there since the 1700s. Let that sink in. 🤯

Keep an eye out for these beauties on our upcoming trails, and stay tuned every Wednesday for more. Because if you’ve been paying close attention... there just might be something in it for you. 😉

Nothing signals the arrival of spring with more pure, joyful abandon than a profusion of wildflower blooms scattered across the forest floor like nature’s own confetti. 🌸

After the winter we just weathered, seeing these first blooms feels like a gift, and we can’t get enough of them!

One of our absolute favorite ways to celebrate the season is to get into the forest and just *be* with these incredible plants. Slow down, look closely, and let the beauty of it all sink in. There is nothing quite like it.

We want to share that feeling with you.

For the next four Wednesdays, we’re bringing you WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAYS 🌼 Each week with feature a new flower with stunning photos and fascinating facts about some of the blooms you’ll find on our trails. A little weekly wonder to brighten your Wednesday and whet your appetite for spring adventures.

And here’s something to make it even sweeter: pay close attention, because on Week 4 we’re posting a wildflower quiz, and we’ll draw 2 winners from the correct entries to win a FREE Day Hike for 2. Your wildflowers, up close and personal. On us. 🎉

Follow along every Wednesday. Your spring escape might be just around the bend.
