50-60% of air cargo volume is due to the e-commerce boom in China. While it has provided a nice boost to start 2024, is it short lived or will it become the new normal?

There are a number of factors that air freight executives should consider while riding the current wave.

Last week we posted a report on the potential for significant carbon reductions in the shipping sector through the adoption of digital processes.

Despite many global disruptions and continued uncertainty, shippers remain measured about their direct investment into visibility data tools.

Can data tools provide accurate relevant information in a seamless, easy to use, appealing application?

https://www.joc.com/article/cautious-shippers-navigate-post-pandemic-landscape-visibility-data-tools_20240419.html

The primary dilemma for shippers is whether to source visibility data or applications from a standalone vendor or to expect it to be included in a bundle from a third-party logistics provider.

With the ongoing Red Sea crisis, continued growth in bookings by Chinese e-commerce platforms, and rising rates during a normally slow shipping period, there are expectations among air carriers for peak season and some logistics providers nervous about securing adequate capacity.

Is it too soon to worry about peak season capacity?

The air cargo sector grew more than 10% during the first quarter on the back of e-commerce exports from China and supply chain disruptions in the Red Sea.

We've seen recent aircraft manufacturing-related safety incidents that might lead to increased scrutiny of air cargo.

At a panel during the IATA’s CNS Partnership Conference, air cargo stakeholders said they are not concerned about increased scrutiny and welcome it.

Safety should be a main concern in all facets of business for forwarders. Do you agree?

It has been a year since the ports of Singapore, Los Angeles, and Long Beach agreed to create a Transpacific "Green Corridor". During that time a study was conducted to determine the benefits and challenges.

The study was conducted by the American Bureau of Shipping, and it determined that the success of the initiative is primarily based on the availability, price, and well-to-wake (WtW) emission factors of alternative clean fuels - specifically methanol and ammonia.

We've seen advances and movement in the clean fuel space. Are we far enough along in the process that the Green Corridor has a legitimate chance at being successful?

According to a new study published by the Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), there is potential for significant carbon reductions in the shipping sector through the adoption of digital processes.

The industry’s continued reliance on paper documents for legal and regulatory needs contributes to the industry’s carbon footprint.

The study advocates for the digitization of many of these processes, including electronic Bills of Lading (eBL) and the use of paperless solutions during the cargo release process.

What are your thoughts?

Continued geopolitical conflicts are starting to impact air freight. As the situation in the Middle East escalates, some carriers have canceled flights and others are avoiding Iranian air space.

As always, the situation remains fluid and forwarders, carrier, etc. must continue to communicate with their clients and partners.

All air cargo block service agreements from Asia to the US and Europe are sold out for the year, due to the surging e-commerce demand.

The China e-commerce boon has given the air freight market a boost to start 2024.

Is this more than a boost and will air freight see positive growth all year?

https://www.joc.com/article/asian-air-cargo-block-space-sold-out-2024-e-commerce-fills-export-capacity_20240404.html

The air freight market is off to a strong start this year with volume out of Asia up 11% in the traditionally slow first quarter while rates rose steadily through March.
