PFAS, commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’, encompass about 12,000 compounds that make products resistant to water, stains and heat. These chemicals work great for their intended use, however they are unable to break down naturally, contaminating the soil and water in which they leech into.

A new study put on by the Environmental Working Group found that wild caught, freshwater fish in US lakes and rivers are severely contaminated with these PFAS forever chemicals. So contaminated in fact, that eating one serving of US freshwater fish is equivalent to drinking highly contaminated water every day for a month.

PFAS chemicals have been linked to cancer, liver and kidney disease, fetal complications and other serious health issues. Currently, there is no clear solution for eradicating the chemicals out of natural resources, but because this study indicates nationwide contamination of freshwater fish, experts are advising to not eat what you catch.

As we recover and adapt to the new landscape of a post covid world, long covid may not be a term that just refers to lasting health effects brought on by this virus. Covid has manipulated our lives in ways we may have yet to realize, especially in regards to our social culture. In a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, 35% of respondents said that socializing had become less important to them after the pandemic, and over a quarter of those interviewed said they were anxious about socializing… not because of sickness concerns, but because perhaps ‘many of us have simply forgotten how to be friends.’

The long term effects of loneliness have been linked to an increase in depression, shortened lifespan, cardiovascular effects and sleep disruption. Check out the below article for insight on how to beat this unwanted covid symptom and how to identify if you may be in a loop of self- perpetuating loneliness.

In the early days of the pandemic, many of us got used to solitude. It’s a habit we need to break.

The push for clean energy is continuing as California’s Port of Long Beach receives $30 Million to aid in infrastructure restoration. 60 new electric yard tractors will replace the older diesel models as well as cover the construction of charging areas for these new tractors. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law awarded ‘record levels of funding to improve our port infrastructure, strengthen our supply chains and help cut costs… “ says US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
Ports across the country, and many in disadvantaged communities, are seeing efforts to modernize and improve systems as well as reduce emissions. A record $684 million in federal funding ‘is available for projects linked to coastal seaports, inland river ports, and ports along the Great Lakes’ Spartnerships.com reports. Alaska’s Port of Nome and Anchorage, Washington’s Tacoma and Port Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland as well as Wisconsin’s port of Green Bay will all be recipients of some major efforts to modernize and expand the country’s shipping capacity in the coming years.

A Michelin Star is perhaps the tallest honor a restaurant can receive on a global scale. With three stars being of the highest caliber, a Michelin Star is only awarded to the best of the best in a given city. But where did this tradition start, and isn’t Michelin the name of a brand of automobile tire?
In 1889 brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin founded their tire company in France, eventually becoming a namesake in the industry. In this time, there were only approximately 3000 vehicles in the entire country. Fueled by the desire to spark the automobile industry, the brothers developed a small red guide that helped motorists plan their routes that was filled with maps, automobile and tire service information.
In 1920, the Michelin brand stepped their game up and reinvented the guide, selling it for 7 francs and included lists of Paris Hotels and restaurants. When the restaurant section saw much success, a team of mystery diners were hired to visit and rate restaurants anonymously, posting the reviews in the book for all to see.
Today, the guide now rates over 40,000 restaurants in three continents and continues its original purpose of “…to make driving, tourism and the search for unforgettable experiences available to all.”

As with all great inventions that changed the course of history, the MICHELIN Guide didn't start out as the iconic dining guide it turned out to be today. The ...

As you walk into a grocery store and look around, it may surprise you that the vast majority of all food and beverage options that you see are owned by 10 companies worldwide. With so much power and say over the food and drink options that we have, these 10 corporations have an astounding impact on the diets and well being of the world’s citizens.

A graph put together by Oxfam International creates an eye-opening web of many brands we recognize and how they fall under the umbrella of a more powerful conglomerate (second link). Chris Jochnick, an employee of Oxfam International stresses the huge impact these companies have on the world, “If you look at the massive global food system, it’s hard to get your head around. Just a handful of companies can dictate food choices, supplier terms and consumer variety.”

Read the first article below to see if you can guess all 10 companies, and maybe hit up the local farmer’s market this summer to support your local producers as well as eat healthier options!

‘Container Loss’ refers to the shipping containers that don’t make it to their intended receiver, and with .25 Billion containers transported around the world every year, container loss is a very real problem. Kathryn Schulz wrote an eye opening article for The New Yorker where she discusses the history and logistics of container transportation and just what happens when containers are lost at sea. Check out the below link to read the full article!

My personal favorite takeaways:

-“The crews of these ultra-large ships are, by comparison, ultra-tiny; a U.L.C.V. can travel from Hong Kong to California carrying twenty-three thousand containers and just twenty-five people.”

-“Since 2011, the W.S.C. has conducted a triennial survey of those members about container loss, and concluded, in 2020, that, on average, 1,382 containers go overboard each year.”

-“…you can get a twenty-five-ton container of coffeemakers from a factory in Malaysia to a warehouse in Ohio for less than the cost of one business-class plane ticket. “Transportation has become so efficient,” he writes, “that for many purposes, freight costs do not much affect economic decisions.””

We’ve supersized our capacity to ship stuff across the seas. As our global supply chains grow, what can we gather from the junk that washes up on shore?

Happy Earth Day 2022!

This year's theme is 'invest in our planet'

Tumalo Creek is proud to announce our investment in the following green initiatives this year:

We are excited about our partnership with our customer Pepsi on their pep+ REnew project to help them reach their commitment to net-zero emissions by 2040.

Additionally, we are a proud SmartWay partner which aims at tracking, documenting and reducing freight emissions across the transportation industry. This allows us to partner with like minded carriers who have our same green values.
