According to data from the Energy Information Administration, a gallon of diesel in July 2008 was $4.76.

In order to understand that in context, a gallon of diesel would have to be $7.23 today to be an equal comparison. You must adjust the number for inflation.

Inflation is a monetary principle. If you don’t understand that, you need to start learning what it is (and what causes it).

2008 was a fascinating time. Owner operators were struggling and there was no fuel surcharge to speak of. They started innovating.

Low rolling resistance tires
Direct drive transmissions
Thinner oil
Bypass oil filtration
APU’s
Aerodynamic modifications on tractor and trailer

They did it on their own. They didn’t wait for the market to adjust. They took 1999-2007 model tractors and made them INCREDIBLY efficient. Many saw 2-3 MPG gains.

They RESPONDED. They didn’t react.

We are still benefiting from that innovation today.

Stop being distracted and get to innovating.

REPAIRING A BOOST LEAK ON OUR 2004 FREIGHTLINER
I found a missing seal ring where the EGR crossover pipe connects to the intake manifold. It created a significant boost leak that can hurt fuel mileage and cause damage to the turbo and exhaust components from excessive heat. Also installed new wiper blades and washer nozzles.

$2.75/7=$0.39

$0.73-0.39=$0.34

In January 2026, we were paying $2.75 per gallon for diesel.

Last week, our cost was $5.10 per gallon

If you get 7 MPG (easily achievable for trucks these days) your cost PER MILE for diesel has risen $0.34 per mile.

The National Average Fuel Surcharge has risen $0.36 per mile since January. That means you’re making money on fuel at 7 MPG.

If you’re trucking business is struggling right now, it’s not because of fuel.

Stop allowing people to manipulate your emotions.
