History:

This one of a kind, 11-story tower was built in late 1929 by A.W. Ross as one of the first substantial Art Deco properties on Wilshire Boulevard in the historical Miracle Mile section of Los Angeles. The building was quickly named the Desmond, as it was built as a landmark to signal those driving along the boulevard that this was where they could find the Desmond’s store: a popular men’s clothing store at the time. Along with the Deco Building and several other buildings along the stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between La Brea and Fairfax, the Desmond boasted the Art Deco style and marked the step in the city’s commercial march westward. Designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, an architect who designed several of the West Coast’s most iconic buildings including the Los Angeles Federal Courthouse and the Awahnee Lodge in Yosemite; the Desmond’s architecture boasts a solid and luxurious base with plate glass, granite and brass. The terrazzo flooring reaches out of the entryway into the sidewalk, as if to draw in passersby and is matched by the gorgeous back façade of the building which accommodated the husbands and chauffeurs that would drop their wives before parking. The building has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a Los Angeles Historical Monument.
