IAH Terminal B is approaching a defining milestone: a late-fall 2026 reopening with 22 new gates and a new central processor, the largest modernization project at the airport.

Check-in and security will come together under one modernized roof, restoring a more balanced flow through Terminal B. The additional gates expand United’s hub capacity, bringing more flights and larger waves of arrivals and departures to IAH’s north side.

For ground transportation, restored capacity means transfer plans must evolve as airport activity rebalances. Terminals in use can shift, and transfers need to be staged, timed, and sequenced with the new operating picture, especially as holiday travel approaches.

October 9 at 9 p.m. changes downtown Houston transportation for the long term.

TxDOT will close the I-10 Katy Freeway–Downtown HOV connector for reconstruction. The eastbound connector is expected to remain out of service through fall 2027. Westbound follows through summer 2028. Peak inbound and outbound downtown runs may add 15–30 minutes.
