Can you imagine finding out you're free?

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free—more than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

While the Emancipation Proclamation legally freed enslaved people in Confederate states, enforcement depended on Union military control. Texas, being remote and largely untouched by Union forces during much of the war, remained a place where slavery continued in practice until federal troops arrived after the Civil War ended. On June 19, 1865, General Granger issued General Order No. 3, declaring that all enslaved people were free.

The following year, freed Black communities began celebrating “Juneteenth” with gatherings, church services, music, food, parades, and educational events. Over time, the observance spread across the country as Black families moved and carried the tradition with them.

In the spotlight is Team
NOTA’s Ron Davis! Since 2024, Ron has provided caring and compassionate transportation for our riders. Ron came to NOTA after retiring from a career in sales for a Tier 1 Automotive Supplier. Collecting antique cars and motorcycles including a 1974 Triumph Trident 3 cylinder, have been a lifelong hobby and passion for Ron. What he enjoys most about driving for NOTA is the opportunity to assist our senior and disabled riders. Over the years, both Ron’s father and Uncle worked as drivers for our community partners at OPC in Rochester, and Ron shares their heart for service. We appreciate you Ron!🤩
