🎷 There was jazz on the Red Line yesterday and there is more to come!

CTA joined Mandala South Asian Performing Arts, Elevated Chicago, and the Butter Chicken Brass Band on Thursday at Howard Red Line Station to officially launch the Red Line Jazz Project!

This free public arts initiative will bring live jazz performances, visual art, storytelling, and community programming to CTA Red Line stations and community spaces throughout Chicago.

We couldn't be more excited to partner with organizations that share our vision of turning everyday transit moments into vibrant, welcoming, community-connected experiences. Yesterday was just the beginning and more performances are coming to Red Line stations through October.

Stay tuned and check out the full schedule of upcoming performances at https://www.mandalaarts.org/event/red-line-jazz-project/

As a part of our public heath partnerships with Cook County Health and the Chicago Department of Public Health, vending machines providing free Naloxone are currently available at six CTA rail stations.

The machines providing these life-saving resources are free, easy to use, and available during station operating hours.

Together, these partnerships support our ongoing efforts to balance safety, public health, and customer experience while recognizing that substance use is a larger societal issue that extends beyond transit.

This month, if you've listened closely while on a CTA rail station platform — you've heard something special!

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, CTA partnered with the Autism Transit Project to feature the voices of 19 incredible local youth and young adults as the stars of our rail system announcements. All month long, their voices have been featured on announcements our riders have heard every single day.

CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen joined Autism Transit Project founder Jonathan Trichter at the Damen Green Line station to celebrate these amazing young people and the talent they brought to our transit system. As a thank-you, they received personalized CTA station signage and even got to ride the Loop on a private train!

The Autism Transit Project beautifully channels the deep connection many autistic individuals have with mass transit — turning that passion into something the entire city of Chicago gets to experience.

The voices shared with us since April 1 belong to some pretty remarkable young people. 💙

From CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen:

On Friday, CTA held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Red Line Extension project. It’s a moment that has been a long time coming — nearly 60 years in the making.

Standing at the site of the future Michigan Avenue Red Line Station on Chicago's Far South Side, surrounded by community members, elected officials, and the workers who will build this extension with their own hands, the weight of the moment was clear. This is not just a construction project. This is a promise — one that was made to the residents of Roseland, Pullman, Washington Heights, and neighboring communities decades ago — finally being kept.

The Red Line Extension will bring rail service to the Far South Side of Chicago for the very first time, stretching 5.5 miles from 95th Street to 130th Street and adding four new, fully accessible stations. For hundreds of thousands of residents, that means a direct connection to jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunity that has simply not been available to them in the way it has been to other parts of this city.

Friday's event was full of energy, people and love for this community. But underneath all of that, I felt something deeper — a profound sense of connection between so many people. The people who have waited. The advocates who never stopped pushing. The riders who have always deserved better—and will now see this goal realized.

Thank you to every federal, state, and city partner who made this possible. And I offer my strongest, most heartfelt thanks to the communities who trusted us. To everyone who will one day board a train at 103rd, 111th, Michigan, or 130th — we cannot wait to serve you.

We are modernizing, extending, and beautifying our public transit stations so they can offer a safe and accessible means of transportation for all Chicagoans. And Chicagoans have responded: taking over 338 million rides in 2025, a 4% increase over 2024!

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen and a host of civic and community leaders to kick off the 2026 building season at the 51st Green Line station in Bronzeville, ushering in an effort to make our stations more welcoming places for young and old.

You’ll notice stations across the system will be getting fresh coats of paint and upgraded equipment, but your young ones will delight when they see the fun, new, child-sized benches that will be installed at 10 of our rail stations.

Crews are already hard at work putting a fresh new face on stations as part of the newly expanded Refresh and Renew Program—which is investing $6.5 million in annual station maintenance to create welcoming spaces. And with the help of Greencorps Chicago, we will be adding landscaping and planters at nine stations, bringing more green space into CTA and creating environments that feel cared for and inviting.
