Ryan Field opened this fall, and North Shore game days have a new rhythm. A little arrival planning can save you from the familiar Evanston loop: slow traffic, full curbs, and a pickup plan made too late.

Around the stadium, event-day street restrictions begin two hours before kickoff and remain in effect until one hour after the event ends. Some nearby blocks, including parts of Central and Lincoln, are permit-only or no-parking zones. Check the posted signs; don’t count on finding a curbside spot by circling.

Taking Uber or Lyft? The authorized pickup and drop-off point is Haven Middle School, 2417 Prairie Ave. After the game, a complimentary shuttle takes guests from Ryan Field to Haven. Save the destination and agree on your exact meeting point before kickoff, while everyone can still hear their phone.

For other rides, settle on a legal, specific pickup location outside restricted streets ahead of time. The trick is simple: stage before the crowd walks out, not after.

Later this month, on October 25, the FAA’s order extending O’Hare’s scheduling limits takes effect. The daily cap will remain at 2,708 total operations through October 30, 2027, while airfield construction continues into summer 2027.

The practical read for travelers: schedules through the coming year are already being shaped by that limit. Some routes may have fewer late-evening options, others may use larger aircraft, and there will be less slack to recover when weather or construction disrupts the day.

Chicago, a heads-up for the next two weeks: the Lake Street Bridge over the river closed at 2 a.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 13, for replacement work. It’s expected to remain closed through about Oct. 26. Green and Pink Line service through the corridor is disrupted, with shuttle buses in place.

If your trip touches West Loop hotels, Fulton Market, Ogilvie Transportation Center or the medical district, plan around the closure, especially if you’d normally cross the river on Lake Street. Other crossings will carry displaced traffic, so river crossings may take extra minutes. Build in more time during the morning and evening peaks.

Meeting a car downtown? Choose a pickup point away from the closed approach, not beside it. Share your exact destination with your driver, then let routing account for the changing streets.

A reservation is never just a name, a time, and an address.

When a trip comes in, we begin by reading the details as a complete itinerary: the pickup and destination, service type, passenger and luggage notes, timing, entrances, stops, and anything that may shape the journey.

The 74th Annual Columbus Day Parade will follow Dearborn Street from Wacker Drive to Van Buren, with opening ceremonies at noon. Because of construction, the route has moved from State Street, so the Dearborn corridor will be the key area to avoid for downtown crossings and vehicle pickups.

A few local logistics notes:

• Morning airport runs: Build in extra time for Loop access, especially if your route brings you near downtown before heading to O’Hare or Midway.

• Midday arrivals: As parade activity builds, do not plan a pickup directly along Dearborn Street or inside the parade footprint.

• Better pickup strategy: Meet several blocks outside the corridor at a confirmed, accessible location. A short walk can make the difference between a smooth departure and a long delay.

Chicago has given us a postseason to remember, and a citywide reason to stand together.

The White Sox swept the Houston Astros in the AL Wild Card Series, closing Game 2 with a 7–3 win on September 30. It is their first playoff series win since the 2005 World Series. Next, they face the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS, beginning Saturday, October 3, in Cleveland.

The Cubs’ season ended at Petco Park, where they fell 4–1 to the San Diego Padres on September 30 in Game 2 of a two-game sweep. Their season may be over, but the team and its fans deserve our respect for giving Chicago another year to believe, gather, and cheer.

Both Chicago teams reaching the 2026 postseason at the same time was a genuine moment of civic pride. Two teams. One city. Countless memories.

Chicago’s fall calendar is at its most spirited, and its most exacting, on Columbus Day weekend.

On Sunday, October 11, the Chicago Marathon will pass through roughly 29 neighborhoods, with street closures expected from approximately 6 a.m. until around 4 p.m. Downtown and Near North crossings may close or reopen intermittently as runners pass, while the Loop, River North, and Near North Side should experience congestion and pickup-area friction through much of the daylight hours.

For hotel pickups, family brunches, visiting relatives, and airport transfers, lock in Sunday morning plans early and build in extra time. Whether you are coming from the South Side, the suburbs, O’Hare, or Midway, this is a weekend for planning, not improvising.

On Monday, October 12, the Columbus Day Parade steps off at noon along Dearborn from Wacker to Van Buren, with the route adjusted for road construction. Arrive early near Wacker and Dearborn, choose a meeting point away from the closed stretch, and let your chauffeur make the final drop a short walk from the parade footprint.

Chicago weekend tip: when Clark Street Live and Randolph Street Market bring two busy event areas to life on the same weekend, the smartest pickup plan starts away from the closed or crowded block, not at the corner.

Clark Street Live runs Sept 26–27 in Wrigleyville, with Clark Street closed between Addison Street and Newport Avenue. Randolph Street Market takes over the West Loop on Sept 26–27, with entrances at 1341 W. Randolph and 1340 W. Washington.

The practical move:
• Choose an open, walkable meeting point outside the event footprint.
• Share one precise pin and the side of the street.
• Confirm the direction of travel before the vehicle approaches.
• Keep a backup point nearby in case pedestrian traffic shifts.

For Wrigleyville, don’t ask a driver to reach the Clark Street corner. For the West Loop, treat the market entrance as a pedestrian landmark, then coordinate a nearby open curb for the actual meeting point.
