Open Letter on Ride Sharing some great unintended consequences of this technology.....

Drivers of ride sharing companies take hundreds of impaired individuals off of the road every day and every weekend. The traditional taxi companies in this area cannot keep up with the volume of people with quick response times who need rides to make our roads safer here in Central Florida. Yet our fine Mayor of Orlando sees fit to try and oust these ride sharing companies out of the City Beautiful.

This morning I spoke with the Executive Director of MADD to discuss this issue on DUI’s and raising awareness of how ride sharing improves public safety. She was quite surprised to hear about today’s vote to oust ride sharing companies as MADD is all about public safety. There are angles to this story that effect real people and are not being shared in the media spotlight. I will assure you that there will be plenty of people riders and drivers who will be very upset if this vote passes and UBER exits Orlando.

I am a driver and hear the comments of my riders who really dislike the cab companies here in Orlando. Every single rider I take (after 380 + trips) talks about this issue and how bad the taxi service here in Orlando is. This is not my opinion, these are real people who will take a UBER or Lyft anytime over a traditional Taxi. All of them say it takes too long to get a taxi and most don’t even show up and the cost is prohibitive. If our fine Mayor was really astute, he would himself become a ride sharing driver to get true understanding of his voter base. One has to do this to really understand how much the public is served in a very positive way.

Everyone in Government sees the DUI problem but only reacts to the problem with tougher penalties and a bigger hammer to punish those involved. No one is seeing the after effects and simplicity of just not driving and taking alternate transportation to reach their destination. Ride sharing provides hundreds of cars with a short response time to be picked up at competitive market cost. If those riders are impaired they now do not need to drive to get where they are going. They are out for a good time and can relax and be safe. This makes the roads safer for everyone.

No one seems to think outside the box to find an innovative approach to reducing drunk driving on our roads. Ride sharing is the easy button to help with this persistent problem to make our roads safer. Our fine Mayor is going to great lengths to try and squash this innovative answer to providing transportation. The local Government entity is also tampering with a free market economy by forcing competitors to raise prices through government fees and price fixing rates to match existing transportation services. The only motivation here is protecting the existing taxi company and keeping their strong monopoly here in Orlando. This issue is all about money, the irresponsible use of power and limited thinking.

Also, it appears that if the ride sharing companies do not match the current high rates and fees of the traditional Taxi companies then they would not be welcome and the local government will make it illegal for them to conduct business within the City Limits of Orlando.

This behavior is tantamount of a government entity to impose price fixing to raise the price of a needed service that raises the level of public safety for the Central Florida area. The Sherman Antitrust Act was enacted to prevent such practices but I am sure that the original thinkers would not have thought that such tactics would be driven by a Government Entity!

There are many angles of this story that are not being addressed, your readership will be pleasantly surprised and much better informed if the whole story can be told. The digital age is upon us, we should embrace it instead of fighting it.
