🚨End of year insurance planning for Non Emergency Medical Transportation & what every caregiver needs to know before December 31st.

Here’s what resets on January 1st that directly affects your loved one’s medical transportation:

🚨 Deductibles restart. Coverage that was running smoothly this year starts over from zero.

🚨 Pre-authorizations expire. That NEMT approval you got earlier this year may not carry into the new plan year. If it lapses, your first January ride could be denied.

🚨Unused benefits disappear. Some plans cap annual NEMT rides. If your loved one hasn’t used their full allocation those rides expire December 31st. Gone !

🚨 Benefit terms can change. Insurance companies adjust coverage every open enrollment. What’s covered today may look different in 2027.

What to do before the year ends:

✅ Call Member Services and ask: “What are my loved one’s NEMT benefits and do they change in the new plan year?”

✅ Ask if any unused ride benefits expire December 31st.

✅ Confirm whether your pre-authorization needs to be renewed.

✅ Lock in your January rides now before the holidays shrink availability.

The families who start 2027 without a transportation problem are the ones handling this in October and November, not waiting until January.

🚨 Why seniors are the most underserved group when it comes to medical transportation and what families can do about it.

By 2030, 1 in 5 Americans, roughly 72 million people will be 65 or older. And yet medical transportation remains one of the least discussed gaps in elder care. ( www.aarp.org )

Here’s why seniors fall through the cracks:

📌 They stop driving and don’t replace it with a plan.
Most seniors give up driving gradually and by the time they can no longer drive at all, no alternative system is in place.

📌 They don’t want to burden family.
Research shows that seniors report significant difficulty asking family and friends for rides even though family and friends remain their primary method of transportation. Many will skip an appointment before they’ll ask a child to take another day off work.

📌 The numbers on missed appointments are staggering.
According to the Community Transportation Association of America, 3.6 million Americans miss medical appointments every year because they lack reliable transportation. More than a quarter of patients surveyed delayed scheduling doctor appointments because transportation was “too much trouble.”

📌 Standard transportation wasn’t built for them.
Ride share apps require smartphones and tech literacy. Public transit requires mobility and stamina many seniors don’t have. More than 700,000 older Americans rely on public transportation to get to medical appointments which is a system that is increasingly unreliable for their needs.

What families can do right now:
Call your loved one’s insurance or Medicaid plan and ask specifically about NEMT benefits. One phone call can unlock a covered, reliable service that changes everything.

🚨 What happens to the body when a dialysis patient misses a treatment ? 🚨

Most people don't realize how serious it is & here's what families managing kidney disease need to understand:

Dialysis does the job that the kidneys can no longer do which is filtering waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood. When a session is missed, those things don't get filtered. They stay in the body and build up.

Within 24–48 hours of a missed session:
🩺 Fluid builds up in the body, causing swelling in the legs, hands, and face
🩺 Potassium levels rise which can cause dangerous heart rhythm problems
🩺 Blood pressure spikes increasing the risk of stroke or heart attack
🩺 Toxins accumulate in the bloodstream causing fatigue, confusion, and nausea

Missing two sessions in a row significantly increases the risk of hospitalization.

And the number one reason dialysis patients miss treatments?

Transportation 🚨

Not unwillingness, not forgetting. A ride that didn't show up, a family member who couldn't get off work, or a provider that doesn't run on weekends.

This is exactly why reliable, consistent NEMT exists and why choosing the right transportation provider for a dialysis patient is one of the most important healthcare decisions a family makes.

Touch of Kindness Transportation runs 7 days a week, every holiday, every weekend. We schedule recurring dialysis rides so your loved one never has to miss a session because of transportation.

🚨 5 things about Non Emergency Medical Transportation that most families don't find out until it's too late.

🚨 It's not just for wheelchair users.
NEMT is for anyone who cannot safely or reliably get themselves to a medical appointment, whether that's due to age, a chronic condition, recovery from surgery, or simply not having a driver available.

🚨 Medicaid may cover it at no cost to you.
NEMT is a federally required benefit under Medicaid. Many families are paying out of pocket for rides they were already entitled to, simply because nobody told them.

🚨 You can set up recurring rides once and never rebook.
Dialysis three times a week or therapy every Tuesday. You set it up once with us, we handle the rest automatically, every time, no weekly calls needed.

🚨 Door to door means all the way inside, not just the curb.
A real NEMT provider walks your loved one from their front door to inside the facility and back. Not curbside. Not "meet us at the lobby." From the Doctors chair to the living room.

🚨 Same day rides are often available.
You don't always have 48 hours notice. Neither do medical needs. We do our best to accommodate last minute requests, just call us.

Save this post & share it with a family who's been figuring this out on their own.
