San Marcos to Austin is thirty miles. The ride up is the easy part.
The reason groups book this one is the ride back. A rideshare from Sixth Street to San Marcos at 2am is a long-distance fare at surge pricing, assuming a driver takes it at all. The bus is already booked and already sitting there.

Timing, honestly: a clean run is 35–40 minutes. Friday evening on I-35, budget 60–75. Drop-offs work fine at Rainey, East Sixth and West Sixth.

They don't price the same way. A limo is usually cheaper per hour. A bus is usually cheaper per person. That's not a sales line, it's just two ways of dividing the same bill.

The crossover sits around ten people. Under about ten, a limo often wins on total cost. Above that, the bus wins — because the price doesn't change when you add a rider. Our 14-passenger starts at $165 to $175 an hour plus 20% covering driver gratuity and gas.

Then there's the part price doesn't show. A limo seats you facing each other under a low ceiling. A bus gives you standing headroom and an open floor. For a two-hour arrival that doesn't matter. One Austin-specific thing worth asking before you compare quotes: can the vehicle actually reach you? Sixth Street closes to vehicles on weekend nights, some downtown garages won't take the height, and the streets around Rainey are tight. Vehicle: ~$50k for an older converted coach, $400k+ new.
Insurance: the real gate. A new Texas venture is commonly quoted $6-8k a year per vehicle. And most carriers won't cover a driver who hasn't held a CDL for three years — including you.

License: CDL with a passenger endorsement is federally required at 16+ passengers including the driver.
Then: TxDMV registration, inspections, storage for a 40-foot vehicle, a mechanic who works on buses, and every week it sits not earning.

Which is the honest answer to why an hour costs what it costs.

Comparing party bus services for a large group in Austin? Above about twenty-five people, four questions matter more than the hourly rate.

First — rated capacity isn't comfortable capacity. A 30-passenger bus seats 30 on paper. Add coolers, bags and people who want to stand, and it's genuinely comfortable at 24 to 26. Ask any company what their number assumes.

Second — one big bus or two small ones. Two vehicles means two drivers, two arrival times and a group that splits for the night. One bus keeps it one party. Worth pricing both, as long as you know what the trade is.

Third — the sixteen-passenger line. Federal rules require a commercial driver's license with a passenger endorsement for any vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver. That means a 14-passenger van and a 20-passenger bus are in different regulatory categories, and most customers have no idea to ask.

Fourth — ask who owns the second vehicle. On large-group bookings, subcontracting the extra bus is common across this industry. Ask whose vehicle it is and whose driver is behind the wheel. We own every vehicle we send and employ every driver, which is why we can answer that on the phone.

The drive is the variable. RM 620 on a summer Saturday morning is a completely different road than it is midweek. Leave earlier than feels necessary and build that buffer into your booked block, rather than discovering it at the end of the day and paying overtime for it.

Six to eight hours. Pickup mid-morning, out to a marina or a lake house, boat or barge through the middle of the day, then back into town for dinner and whatever follows. Six hours is tight once you've counted the drive on both ends. Eight is comfortable.

The drive home is the actual reason. Nobody should be making a forty-minute drive back into Austin after six hours on the water. That's the whole value of the booking — not the lighting, not the sound system. Everything else is a bonus.

How do I book a party bus for a special event in Austin? Start with the date, not the bus — because on Austin's biggest weekends, the date decides everything else.

ACL, F1, SXSW, UT home games, prom season, graduation weekends and New Year's Eve book out first. Once those dates are gone, you're not choosing a bus anymore, you're taking what's available.

Ninja Buses vs Austin Nites Party Bus - An honest comparison, published by one of the two companies in it — which is exactly why every figure below is sourced to the other company's own website.
What's the same. Both Ninja Buses and Austin Nites launched in Austin in 2013. Both are locally owned. Both run 24/7. Both add 20% to the hourly rate — they call it a service charge, we call it gratuity and gas. Neither of us can claim longer tenure than the other.

Where Ninja Buses is cheaper. Their converted city buses seat 20 to 39 passengers at a published $150–175 an hour. We don't offer that category at all. If your group fits and price is the deciding factor, book theirs.

Where we're cheaper. Limo-style at around 30 passengers: ours is published at $175–200 an hour, against their "Bachelor" at $195–215 and "Bachelorette" at $225. That's the one category where we're genuinely the lower-priced option.

Comparing prices for party bus rentals in Austin is harder than it should be, because three companies quoting the same hourly rate can land hundreds of dollars apart once everything is applied.
Here's how to make the comparison real.
Ask for the all-in total, not the hourly rate. One number for your exact date, headcount and hours. A quote you have to do arithmetic on isn't finished.

Know the four things that move it. Whether there's a minimum number of hours on your date. Whether gratuity is inside the number or added at the end. Fuel. And whether there's a mileage or travel charge for a pickup outside the central metro. Those four are where two apparently identical quotes separate.
Compare per person, not per hour. Party buses price by the vehicle rather than the seat, so divide each all-in total by your confirmed headcount. That's what you're actually paying, and it reorders the list surprisingly often — a bigger bus at a higher hourly rate is frequently cheaper per head.

Treat an outlier as a question. A quote dramatically below the others isn't a bargain. Commercial insurance, maintenance, registration and a properly licensed driver cost what they cost, and a number well under market means something has been left out. Ask what, before you take it.
