Rain is here, and it may be heavy.
Government says most of Uganda could get about 25% more rain than usual this season. The heaviest weeks are expected from now to mid-November, easing around late December, with some areas staying wet into January. Not every place will flood, but every farmer should plan as if the rain will test the harvest.
This season some farmers, like those in Lango, lost crops to a dry spell. Now the danger is the opposite: beans that grow mould, maize that rots in the bag, and roads that stop the buyer from reaching you. Grain already in your store is at risk too, because damp air gets in.
Simple steps that protect your income this week:
✅ Keep food and seed off the ground, on raised platforms
✅ Dry properly before storing, because wet grain spoils even in a good store
✅ Cover produce with tarpaulins when rain threatens
✅ Check stored grain often for damp, mould or insects
✅ Join other farmers to share a drying space and a store
✅ Keep some seed aside for the next season
Selling alone, wet and in a hurry, lets the buyer set the price. Selling together, dry and graded, lets you negotiate.
