✨ 2026 Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival ✨

Event Dates:
📍 Feb 27 (Fri) — Pingxi Junior High School
📍 Mar 3 (Tue) — Shifen Square

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival dates back to the Qing Dynasty, originating from a tradition called “reporting safety.”
In the past, bandits often troubled the mountain villages of Pingxi. After the winter harvest, villagers would temporarily hide in the mountains. Once it was safe, those who stayed behind would release sky lanterns to signal their families to return home.

Over time, as life became more peaceful, this practice evolved into a local tradition.
People began writing wishes and blessings on the lanterns and releasing them during the Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the Lunar New Year), praying for good fortune, safety, and blessings from the heavens.

That’s why sky lanterns are also known as “Blessing Lanterns” or “Peace Lanterns.”

It’s recommended to take the Pingxi Line from Ruifang Station for the full local experience.

Personally… I go with chopsticks – mostly because I can grab some veggies at the same time!
