Talad Rom Hub (Umbrella Market)
If you’re a foreigner staying in Bangkok and looking for a unique and quirky travel experience, we recommend visiting the Maeklong Railway Market — one of Thailand’s most fascinating destinations.
Why should you visit?
• This market is located along the Maeklong Railway Line in Samut Songkhram Province. When a train passes by, vendors “close their umbrellas,” temporarily hiding or moving their goods, then reopen them immediately after the train passes. It’s a rare and unforgettable sight.
• It’s a genuine local fresh market, offering a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, seafood, and Thai snacks that you can see, taste, and buy as souvenirs.
• It’s not far from Bangkok — only about 1 to 1.5 hours from the city center, depending on traffic and your mode of transport.
Tips & Things to Know
• Arrive 10–15 minutes before the train passes to secure a good photo spot, as it can get quite crowded.
• Avoid getting too close to the tracks for safety reasons — it’s fun to watch, but safety comes first.
• Bring some cash, as some stalls may not accept credit cards.
• What to buy: fresh Thai fruits, dried seafood, and unique Thai souvenirs.
• Don’t miss trying local treats such as mango sticky rice and Thai-style ice cream — there are many food stalls throughout the market.
• It can be very crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. If you prefer a quieter experience, visit on a weekday morning instead.
