✈️ New border control system in Europe: the EES

The European Union has started implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital system that electronically records the entry and exit of non-EU citizens in the Schengen Area.

In practice, this means that the old passport stamp has been replaced by an electronic record, including the collection of data such as facial photos and fingerprints upon first entry.

📌 The system applies to travelers from countries outside the European Union entering for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).

⚠️ Important for those living in Portugal who still do not have a residence permit:
If you leave the Schengen Area, the system will automatically record your entry and exit. Therefore, it is essential to have documents proving that you are in the process of legalizing your status in the country.
