A few days ago, the new Lagoon 83 was unveiled in Bordeaux. As a specialist in this field ,having worked and still working on large Lagoon catamarans.I have my own perspective on this model.
In my opinion, the 83 is largely a refined evolution of the very successful L78. The most noticeable changes have been made to the interior. It’s difficult to say whether they are entirely for the better ,there is slightly more space, along with a new palette of colors and materials.
At the stern, the rear sofa has been removed, creating a large open area that was previously missing. The tender platform, now folding in two sections, is certainly an innovative solution.I haven’t seen this implemented by competitors yet. Of course, time will tell how it performs in everyday use.
The saloon windows surrounding the yacht have been raised by approximately 10 cm, improving both visibility and natural light. The forward cockpit area has also gained additional space thanks to the repositioning of the forward saloon doors.
The flybridge roof and boom are now made of carbon, which should contribute positively to the yacht’s overall stability.
On the downside, at first glance I noticed that the boarding ladder mounting system has not been improved. I experienced issues with this on the 77 and 78 models, and it is surprising that the engineers have not opted for a simpler and more cost-effective solution. It remains a weak point.
As for propulsion, the yacht continues to be powered by John Deere N13 engines, delivering 580 HP each. From experience, I can say that with half fuel tanks, in good conditions (no headwind and relatively flat seas), at around 900 rpm the yacht cruises at approximately 8.5 knots, consuming about 20–25 L/h. The yacht’s range is excellent — I personally crossed the Atlantic from Gibraltar ,Canaries,Cabo Verde to Guadeloupe on L78 without any additional fuel, using only what fit in the tanks. Now it’s time for the return trip from Sint Maarten via the Azores and Gibraltar. In my view, this offers a very quiet, comfortable, and capable ocean-going experience.
Overall, I would rate this model positively. While competitors are making bold and aggressive changes to their yacht designs, Lagoon is clearly following an evolutionary rather than revolutionary approach.
To put it simply. What is the visual difference between an iPhone 10 and an iPhone 16? Not dramatic. The same applies here. I believe this yacht will be well appreciated by true connoisseurs.
Congratulations to Lagoon on this release. If you are looking for understated, neutral luxury — you are definitely in the right place.
