BREAKING: President Tinubu has approved the comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which will see the agency being led by a civilian in its operational leadership, while the military will continue to handle security for corps members across the country.

Tinubu also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to reflect all the approved reform measures, enabling immediate implementation of the new framework.

Some of the landmark reforms include:

1. A technology-driven call-up process.

2. Risk-sensitive deployment to better protect corps members.

3. A redesigned six-week orientation programme with a stronger focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialised career streams.

4. Skills-based primary assignments aligned with academic background and career pathways.

5. Modern governance with civilian operational leadership while the military continues to provide security support.

6. Improved camp standards through a national grading and certification system.

7. A new graduation ceremony to replace the Passing Out Parade, and a redesigned NYSC uniform that reflects professionalism and national pride.

PRESIDENT TINUBU GRANTS CGC ADENIYI A SIX-MONTH TENURE EXTENSION

President Tinubu has granted a final six-month tenure extension to the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.

As Comptroller General of Customs, Adeniyi's first tenure extension ought to have expired on August 1, 2026.

The six-month extension, which will expire in February 2027, is to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service.

During the transition period, Adeniyi, working with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years.

Adeniyi joined the Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 80s.

He rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller General in 2020, Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before his appointment by President Tinubu in June 2023 as the Comptroller General.

REBUTTAL ON THE MISLEADING SOCIAL MEDIA CONTROVERSY REGARDING THE POSITION OF FIRST LADY IN BENUE STATE

The Office of the Deputy Governor of Benue State has observed with concern the unnecessary controversy and misleading discussions circulating on various social media platforms regarding the position of First Lady in Benue State.

For the avoidance of doubt, Mrs. Christie Ada Sam-Ode is the wife of the Deputy Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, mni. By virtue of this status, she is the wife of the Deputy Governor and not the First Lady of Benue State.

It is important to state unequivocally that the position of First Lady in a state is traditionally and officially occupied by the wife of the Governor. Furthermore, the Governor reserves the prerogative to assign responsibilities within his administration as he deems appropriate. Consequently, Mrs. Christie Ada Sam-Ode is neither entitled to nor lays claim to the position of First Lady of Benue State. Any insinuation to the contrary is misleading, unfounded, and should be disregarded.

As the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sam-Ode remains committed to supporting her husband in the discharge of his responsibilities and in advancing initiatives that complement the administration's efforts towards the development and welfare of the people of Benue State. Her role is focused on supporting the Deputy Governor as he carries out duties delegated or assigned to him from time to time by the Governor.

Moreover, the Deputy Governor and his family have continued to enjoy a cordial and productive working relationship with the Governor of Benue State and other key actors within the government. This relationship is anchored on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to delivering good governance and sustainable development to the people of the State.

We therefore urge members of the public to disregard any misleading narratives intended to create unnecessary distractions or sow discord where none exists.

We believe this clarification should finally put to rest the needless controversy and debate currently making the rounds in the social media space.
