Did you know that giant giraffes may have once roamed the prehistoric jungles of Sri Lanka?

It sounds like something out of a fantasy novel, but the proof lies in a single fossilized tooth discovered in the gem pits of Kuruvita (Ratnapura). This remarkable find—an upper fourth premolar—initially baffled local researchers. It was so distinct from typical bovine fossils that drawings were sent all the way to the American Museum of Natural History for identification.

The verdict from the world’s leading experts? The tooth belonged to a massive giraffid that inhabited the region during the Pleistocene epoch.

The "Sinhalese Giraffe"

Formally dubbed Giraffa sivalensis sinhaleyus, this extinct herbivore was a local subspecies of the famous Siwalik giraffe found in India. While we often think of giraffes as strictly African icons today, this discovery confirms they were a vital part of the extinct Ratnapura fauna.

Key Specs of the Fossil:

• Height: 50 mm
• Length: 19.5 mm
• Width: 17 mm
• Unique Feature: It was more "hypsodont" (high-crowned) and slender than its mainland cousins, with more complex convolutions on the tooth crown.

This means that while our ancestors were roaming the island, they might have looked up to see these elegant giants browsing the canopy. It’s a vivid reminder of how much the biodiversity of "Ceylon" has changed over millennia.
