Aci Castello has ancient origins, with a Norman castle built by the Normans in 1076, and the village saw various ownership changes between the Middle Ages and modern times. Aci Trezza, founded in the late 17th century, became known for its fishing community. Both places are steeped in legend—Aci Trezza’s Cyclopean stacks are said to be the rocks thrown by Polyphemus in Greek mythology. These villages were immortalized by Giovanni Verga’s novel “I Malavoglia,” depicting the struggles of a fishing family, and the area was later brought to life in the neorealist film “La Terra Trema.”
