Container traffic at New Mangalore Port gets a boost
Container traffic at New Mangalore Port has got a shot in the arm with Gujarat Ambuja Exports Ltd choosing the Port for exporting its containerised cargo of liquid glucose in hdpe barrels. The cargo, which is manufactured at the company’s plant in Shiggaon Taluk of Haveri District, Karnataka, was transported last month to the Port in 25 containers for shipment to Sudan onboard the vessel M.V. Tiger Mango. The vessel had berthed on February 12.
The vessel sailed out after the loading of the consignment was completed. The company took the decision to export the cargo through New Mangalore Port subsequent to the recent visit of Mr Manish Kumar Gupta, Managing Director, and Mr Prashanth Pillai, Deputy General Manager to the Port and their discussions with Port officials, logistics service providers, CHAs and MLOs.
According to an official release, the exporter expressed complete satisfaction at the performance of the Port and its infrastructure, and hinted at a monthly volume of 100 TEUs.
While thanking Gujarat Ambuja Exports for its decision, Dr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, attributed the increased box cargo handling to the proactive marketing efforts initiated by the Port at various locations in the hinterland during the last few years, coupled with infrastructure additions, the improved frequency of container vessel calls, and the efficient handling of containers.
New Mangalore Port’s container throughput has improved in the current financial year to (as on date) 45,265 TEUs, as against 43,278 TEUs in the corresponding period of 2011-12, a growth of 4.59 per cent.
