FAIRYTALES ARE A WAY OF LIFE IN SLIGO!

This is Yeats' country. Ireland's most romantic poet grew up here and he's buried at the foot of that mountain in the background. It's no wonder, then, that the photograph itself looks like something out of a romantic poem, as Ted (the horse) and his driver plod the long and winding road to a fairytale castle and a mountain cloaked in mist and steeped in legend.

The castle is Classiebawn which overlooks Mullaghmore bay on Sligo's Wild Atlantic Way. Benbulben is the mountain in the distance, a favourite place of the Fianna, a band of warriors who lived in the 3rd century. The mountain is also said to be the final resting place of star-crossed lovers Gráinne (daughter of Cormac mac Airt, High King of Ireland ) and Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, one of the Fianna. ☺️
