Glendeer Pet Farm - a great day out for children young or old. The puppies are a great draw but there's so much more there - animals including goats, sheep, pigs, raccoons, emus, parrots, capuchin monkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs ... Plus a fantastic outdoor playground with zip wires, slides, obstacle course, see-saws and an indoor soft play area for younger children. A fantastic day out for the whole family.

A short distance from Athlone is the famous ancient monastery site of Clonmacnoise. Visited by Pope John Paul II in 1979, it is a reminder of why Ireland is known as 'an island of saints and scholars'
