The city changes. The generations shift. But the history we share remains set in stone. šŸ•Æļø

Take a look at the iconic Roman Column outside York Minster.
The first image, from the mid 90s, was sent in by one of our annual guests; Charlie and Sue Pipal, Blueprint Tours - Riverside Illinois USA

The second and third images bring us right into the modern day, standing on the exact same stone plinth, ready to guide you into the night.
We don't just tell the history of York; our guests have made us a part of it.

šŸ“ø Do you have old photos from your time on the walk? Whether it's from the 70s, 80s, 90s, or recent years, we want to see them. Send your pictures and stories to us via DM or tag us! Help us map out the past, present, and future of the oldest ghost walk in the world.

Step into the timeline with us tonight.

"Even the spirits need a rest when the thundering hooves arrive." šŸŽ

The city of York is currently alive with the energy of the Dante Festival, and for a brief moment, the living have outnumbered the dead.

To make way for the racing crowds, The Original Ghost Walk will be closed on:
āŒ Wednesday 13th
āŒ Thursday 14th
āŒ Friday 15th

We shall return to the shadows on Saturday, May 16th, as the sun sets over the Ouse.

While the racecourse holds the excitement of the day, remember what lies beneath the track. The Ebor Nook has its own tales of Roman burials and restless souls—perhaps they’ll be watching the finish line with you. šŸ•Æļø

See you Saturday at 8:00 PM at The King’s Arms.

Look up at the portcullis of Monk Bar—it’s the only one in York that still works. But it wasn't built for decoration; it was built for blood.

The 'murder holes' in the ceiling above the archway were designed so defenders could pour boiling water or hot sand onto attackers trapped below. They say that on certain quiet nights, when the wind whistles through the stone, you can still hear the panicked clawing at the gates from those who couldn't get in—or out.

Congratulations to York City on their promotion to League Two, we are looking forward to seeing the players get their well deserved parade today!

To top that off, on a rare day off, we were able to meet one of the greatest people you are ever likely to encounter, who told his story at the York Barbican last week, Kevin Sinfield.

What a fantastic piece of artwork. A striking mural of The famous Purple Man.
There was no charity that he didn’t raise money for! We are so proud to have supported him with his many worthy causes throughout the years and so proud to call him a friend.

A colourful fixture in Stonegate he was often the subject of ridicule, but he stood up for what he believed in - human kindness and goodwill.

Credit to Spark:York CIC and artist Tom Sledmore for this brilliant tribute to Mike Todd.

"Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded by a sleep." — William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Today, we celebrate St. George’s Day and the birth and death of England’s greatest storyteller. But in the ancient streets of York, some dreams refuse to fade, and some lives haven't quite found their sleep.

England's history is written in the shadows, on its streets and buildings.
On this day of national pride, come and walk through the living poetry of the world's most haunted city.

The stage is set. The sun is setting. The ghosts are waiting.

With the city filled with families, laughter, and the promise of spring, there’s no better time to discover what truly lies beneath York’s cobbled street during the Easter holidays

Our Ghost Walk has welcomed visitors of all ages for over 50 years… and while the stories may chill, they are told with a certain warmth all year round. Full of mystery, history, and just enough scary details to keep younger minds curious rather than fearful.

Perfect for families looking to experience something a little different this Easter.

Step away from the chocolate eggs for an evening…
and into the stories that have lingered here for centuries.

It’s Viking Week in York… which is about so much more than people walking around dressed as Vikings.

The Norse didn’t just believe in battle and glory. They believed in spirits. In the restless dead. In the draugr, guardians of burial mounds who refused to stay buried. In omens, hauntings and whispers carried on the wind from the other side.

Much of Viking lore lived in the breath of the storyteller, with tales passed orally and not always written down. Passed from voice to voice next to campfires, stories of slain enemies and fallen allies. An oral tradition as fragile as the smoke from those fires. We’ve lost so many of those tales due to their spoken tradition, lost to time, never written down.

But the shadows remain of these long-gone warriors in York.

York, once known as Jorvik, still hums with echoes of its Norse past. And just as Viking skalds once kept their legends alive through spoken word, The Original Ghostwalk of York continues that tradition. Not with sagas of Odin and Thor, but with true accounts of sightings, experiences and unexplained encounters gathered over the past five decades.

Stories told.
Stories remembered.
Stories that refuse to rest.

Join us this Viking Week and walk the city where warriors once trod, and where, perhaps, not all of them have quite left…

Because some legends fade.
And some linger.
