This is a horse that I have been working with for a number of years. Between the owner, the physiotherapist, and myself, it was noted that she felt tight through the hips, which was causing her land on the outside of her hind hooves first. To help combat this, I used a lateral extension on the hind shoes to alter the axial swing of the limb and prevent it from travelling as far beneath her. Working together with the physio, having regular treatments, the horse has built up correct muscle and become more supple, thus working better behind and feeling much better in herself 🐴

This thoroughbred was presented to me recently, displaying a mild lameness in front. Veterinary xrays showed a slight derotation of the pedal bones and some arthritic changes. The horse was also hampered by two complicated cracks in the nearside fore. To help with the derotation, a Jim Blurton aluminium heartbar shoe was applied, with a rolled toe to ease breakover and help transfer weight to the horses frog. A raised heel pad was then used to help combat the derotation of the pedal bone. In addition, dental impression material was used to ease concussion and protect the thin soles. Once shod, the hoof cracks were thoroughly cleaned and debrided, and a hoof cast applied to strengthen the hoof wall, further prevent dirt ingress and avoid shoe loss in this wet and windy weather! He is now feeling much more comfortable, and improvements are already seen, and will continue to do so with a maintained remedial hoof care routine. 👍🐴

To all my clients;

💥Coronavirus/Covid-19 Protocols💥

As we are now under new government measures, I will continuing to work in the respect of animal welfare but will be applying the following:

⭐️ I am more than happy to help myself to a horse that has been left in their stable. If they require you to be present, social distancing MUST be adhered to at ALL times.

⭐️ I have hand sanitizer in the van, which I will use after and before touching any gates, taps etc.

⭐️ I will be thoroughly washing my hands at every appointment. Please show me where the taps are!

⭐️ Please no cups of tea or coffee (😭) for the foreseeable future, I will bring my own.

⭐️ At this time bacs payment is ideal as there no cross contamination. Cash to be placed in an envelope and placed in the van or in a designated location if you are not present.

⭐️ If you feel unwell or those you live with feel unwell, don’t risk it I’m happy to work on my own where possible or I can work with any nominated person. I have family at home too!!

⭐️ If I start to feel unwell or members of my family feel unwell, I will arrange cover during any period of self isolation. Consequently, if any of my local colleagues have to self isolate I am happy to provide cover where possible. We have a great network of farriers in the area and we will work together.

There can be no indication of how long this situation will last. It could be 1 week, 2 weeks or 6 months. The sooner it passes, the sooner we can get back to doing the things we love.

Finally, if any advice is required from my clients regarding hoof care during this time feel free to contact me any time.

Please share

Many thanks and stay safe!

Luke.

This is a horse who I have recently met, who had recieved diagnosis of navicular changes and arthritis in the distal interfalangeal joint. This horse suffers from thin soles and low, weak heels which have been crushed over a period of time. The horse had been on heart bar shoes to transfer some of the weight to the frog and copper sulfate sole pack had been applied to protect the thin soles; however the weather and poor ground conditions were causing a bacterial issue. To rectify this, I applied Stromsholm Razor Horse Pro Pads which are shock absorbing and provide a supportive but natural barefoot feel to the horse. Under these pads I used Magic Cushion hoof packing to fill the void between the sole and the pad, and to help kill bacteria and keep the area clean as well as reduce swelling, soreness and heat in the hoof. Finally, I used 3/4 fullered, quarter clipped shoes with a rolled toe to help ease break over. The result was a happy horse, who I will hopefully be able to help keep sound and riding, pain and bacteria free!
