𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 (𝗠𝗧𝗗) – 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲

With the new tax year starting on 6 April, we want to highlight an important change that may affect independent contractors. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a new way for sole traders to report their income and expenses to HMRC.

MTD is a new HMRC system that requires self-employed individuals to keep digital records and submit updates throughout the year, instead of relying on a single annual tax return.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽

• If an individual is registered for Self Assessment
• Gets income from self-employment or property, or both
• Have qualifying income of more than £50,000

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂

You, or your agent if you have one, will need to use software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax to:

• Create, store and correct digital records of your self-employment and property income and expenses
• Send your quarterly updates to HMRC
• Submit your tax return and pay tax due by 31 January the following year

If you’re on the road for business, staying on top of your Vehicle Tax, Insurance and MOT isn’t just admin — it keeps your business moving.

Driving without valid insurance can lead to:
• A fixed penalty of £300
• 6 penalty points on your licence

• Disqualification from driving

If you look after your vehicle properly and you don't drive aggressively, it’ll last longer. You'd be surprised by how many breakdowns and potentially dangerous defects are caused by not doing them.

As we head into the festive season with holiday parties, Christmas dinners, and a lot more socialising — it’s more important than ever to think carefully before getting behind the wheel.

⚠️ 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?

In 2023 there were an estimated 260 fatalities in Great Britain from collisions involving a driver over the drink-drive limit.

In that same year, a total of about 6,310 people were either killed or injured in drink-drive related incidents.

December is one of the most dangerous months of the year for drink-drive incidents — the combination of longer evenings, winter weather, festive events and increased socialising all add risks.

As couriers and road users ourselves, we carry a responsibility — not just to deliver parcels and services, but to help keep roads safe for everyone: drivers, passengers, pedestrians.

✅ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀, 𝗹𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:

If you’re drinking — don’t drive. Plan ahead for a taxi, public transport, or get a lift from someone sober.

If you have to deliver or travel early the next morning — don’t assume you’ll be safe just because the party’s over. Alcohol can still impair you.

Lead by example. Whether you’re behind the wheel for work or personal reasons — drive sober, stay alert, and keep others safe.

⭐ Let’s make this a season to remember for good reasons: safe deliveries, warm homes, and loved ones arriving home safe. No one needs to become a statistic — not on our roads, not this Christmas.
