Friday in Manchester looked a little different for us 👀❄️

We handled the chilled logistics for this massive Arla LactoFREE activation in the city centre, working yet again, with ZEAL Creative to keep everything cold and on time behind the scenes.

Smoothie vans, giant yogurt pots, and a great crowd soaking it all up. Our driver, Cole, did a great job going back and forth to storage, making sure sure the products were replenished and of course, in perfect refrigerated condition 👌

I went on James Sinclair business broadcast last week. Here’s what we talked about:

The margins. Right now they’re good. But James made it clear they’re going to get squeezed as I expand and bring staff in-house. More overheads, more fixed costs, thinner margins per job.

That’s the trade every operator makes when they scale up.

The quiet days. The ones where there’s no work at all. Those are harder than the busy ones, mentally. Anyone who’s run a small operation knows that feeling and nobody posts about it.

The idea of finding a cold storage owner who’s ready to retire, and folding that into what I’m already doing. Not just adding revenue, but building something with actual moats around it. Strengthening my position with the customer by adding storage as well as distribution.

A flat battery is not what you need at 4 am on a bank holiday Monday

Even worse if you’re in a residential area and a jumpstart is not possible. Luckily, we invested in three of these during the winter as a backup.

You can pick them up for around £100. Ideal for storing in the cab. They also double as a powerful LED torch and a power bank.

Easily recharged via your USB socket.

Running a refrigerated transport business is anything but.

Some weeks everything flows.
Others it’s breakdowns, last-minute changes, rising costs, and trying to work out where the profit actually went.

I’ve started writing about the real side of it.

So Ford failed to diagnose a burning smell I was getting in the cab of my Ranger, on 2 occasions. Eventually they said the Turbo needed replacing with a cost of £3518.

I went to an independent garage for a second opinion and in less than a day they identified a differential breather pipe was leak leaking diff oil.

What’s even worse? This particular fault is on an internal technical service bulletin with Ford 😳

Total cost for this temporary repair (Parts are on backorder) was £112.

This is the type of thing that can wipe small Businesses out in no time. Well worth two trains and a tram for the second opinion.

And of course, I will be returning to this independent Garage for the final repair 👍
