Ferguslie Park Police Station Update!
Renfrewshire Community Transport - Charity - SCIO (RCT) had a vision to take the building on, make it a community resource, and base transport from there, creating local jobs, training and volunteering opportunities.
We were one of three community groups that expressed an interest.
After a lengthy process, RCT decided not to make the latest requested changes to our constitution, as they were a step too far for a community of interest (Community Transport Across Renfrewshire).
As far as we are aware, the Police Station has not been sold yet and is planned to go on the market after it has undergone a trawl process, which ended on the 5th May, during which local authorities or other public bodies could have requested ownership.
Community groups can request an asset transfer until any public building is legally sold. However, once it's on the market, it's much harder to achieve.
At this stage, in reality, the only feasible way for RCT to get the building is by purchase, and we hope that Police Scotland Renfrewshire & Inverclyde continue to take best value and community benefit into account (which would align with the guidance they work under), as well as feasible timescales to raise the funds, not just the highest bid.
In the eyes of the asset team, RCT had their chance; however, the community asset process was new to both parties, and lessons could be learned on both sides, to make it more feasible for community groups in future, like in other areas of Scotland (which we have only become aware of this recently).
RCT would need to raise between ยฃ55k and ยฃ79k to make the purchase.
Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments, and let others know. If you see it coming on the market soon, please share this with us, too.
RCT continues to operate from the Tannahill Centre while we develop our services. We will keep working with partners to identify good opportunities.
