A lovely customer gave me this - also lovely! - drop leaf table on a job today. I’m going to try my hand at restoration, with a bit of help from YouTube.

If anyone has a couple of (free) chairs going spare, please send them my way!

....But I did!

Phew! £640 later, my van passed its MOT retest today. Mainly brakes needed fixing, but very superficial fuel anti tamper device cost a whopping £200! Anyway, very relieved today.

My van went where no van/man should go yesterday. VERY rural Cornwall. I spent 2 hours cleaning her this morning!

Looking forward to doing a Sunday job tomorrow in a freshly cleaned van.

Diary of St Eval Man With A Van, age 56 3/4.

27th March - Get chest infection that is still with me today (18th June). Suspect whooping cough - the so-called ‘100 day cough’.

March/April/May - Turn down so many jobs as I spend all day every day coughing up the most disgusting stuff from my lungs. Feel bad to let people down, but this I do NOT want to pass on, even if I were physically able to work.

May 14th - Took van for MOT thinking MOT expired on 28th May. It didn't - it expired on 18th May. How very stupid of me! Turns out first garage can't do MOT as van is Class 7 vehicle (I didn’t even know it WAS a Class 7 vehicle!). Have to go elsewhere.

(May 18th - June 17th - can’t do any jobs as van now has no MOT!)

June 4th - After waiting 10 days for an appointment ‘elsewhere’, MOT fails. Lots of work needs doing. Stress.

June 10th - 13th - Trevisker Garage (Dean) have fixed lots on the van, and MOT retest is Monday 17th June.

June 17th. Hallelujah! MOT pass. Now I’m back on the road……

Sleepless nights this week. MOT booked for my lovely van this Friday, the 24th May. She's in great condition, so I'll be relieved once she passes! Can't help worrying, though.

I can't do any more dump runs until late July. Bit of a long story. But I can still do -

1. Small house/flat moves.
2. Help with FB Marketplace purchases that won't quite fit in your car.
3. Help with big items that need moving locally or nationally.
4. Motorbike transportation. I haven't done one of these yet, so the first one may be cheap/a bit amateur hour(!), til I find my feet.

I can help with moves local or national. Transporting one item, or however many will fit in the van. Recently, I've had a few people needing help with big Facebook Marketplace purchases.

2 bits of news this week -

Tip runs. I can now only do 2 more tip runs before July, and only for those who want a completely full van disposed of. The cost for a completely full van is £150, but you really can get A LOT in it.

Spain. I have a customer who wants me to do a job going to Spain and back. But to spread the cost, she's asked if anyone else wants a similar thing doing - either something taken over there or something brought back.

The cost for one job like this would be around £1875. I did a job to Portugal last year, and that's what it cost (all in). Divide this by 2 or 3 (and add a little bit more) to get the cost for a joint job with 2 or 3 other folk.

There's no time scale on my customer's request - just as and when.

Here's a list of stuff I can do, and my charges so far -

1. House Moves - £30ph. I've done quite a few local house moves now (mainly 2 bedroom houses), and they normally take about 5-6 hours, depending on how much there is to move.

2. Courier Jobs - A 'Courier Job' is just moving one or two things from one place to the other. For example, to move a sofa from Porth to Nansledan would be £60. A local job like this would be that price. But if you need something moved further away, I'd have to work out the miles to price it up. I'll always be competitive. I have ratchet straps to secure items on a long journey.

3. Motorbike transportation - I haven't done one of these yet, but it would depend on the miles. I have ratchet straps and cushions to secure bikes. For the first job, I would also need a ramp, and some help from you! The first job or two may be quite cheap for this reason.

4. Anything else you need a van for! Just ask.
