Most people know Stonehenge from the history books, a silhouette against the sky on the front of a brochure. But when you stand out on Salisbury Plain with a small group, away from the big tour buses, the place takes on a completely different atmosphere.

It’s not just about the scale of the monument. It’s the small details, the weathered texture of the sarsen stones, the ancient burial mounds dotting the landscape, and the stories of the neolithic people who gathered here over 4,500 years ago.

To me, exploring the British countryside is about taking the time to understand why these places mattered to the people who built them, and why they still capture our imagination today. It’s about connection, not just crossing a landmark off a checklist.

Most people come to this corner of the City for the Great Dome of St Paul’s, but if you want to find the real heart of London, you have to look for the names on the wall.

Tucked away in Postman’s Park is the Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. It isn’t a place for grand statues of Kings or Generals. Instead, these Doulton ceramic tiles tell the stories of “ordinary” Londoners who did extraordinary things, like Alice Ayres, who saved three children from a fire, or Arthur Strange, who jumped into the Thames to save a stranger.

To me, the soul of a place is found in these quiet backstreets and the stories that most people walk right past. It’s a reminder that the spirit of London is built on quiet courage, not just big monuments.
