Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a wel

come change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. All of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony - a great way to watch the world go by.

Treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion with loved ones. Starting at Llanfair Caereinion (SY21 0SF), you’ll take a beautiful, scenic journey complete with savoury delights made locally.

Available on 14 June and 20 September.

⭐DIESEL FEST! - Wednesday 27th May

🌞Due to the continued high temperatures, and for the safety of our locomotive crews, tomorrows trains operated by 1877 will now be diesel hauled.

📷This is a rare opportunity to see two of our diesels normally focused on engineering works, operating passenger trains together.
🚃No.17 'Diema' will haul the 10.30 & 13.45 departures.
🚃No.7 'Chattenden' will haul the 12.00 & 15.30 departures.

We apologise for any inconvenience and will update when we are returning to steam.
