| Buses are officially back under public control 🚍

To mark this historic moment, Mayor Steve Rotheram joined Minister for Local Transport Simon Lightwood MP for a bus journey alongside students from Carmel College in St Helens.

The journey offered a chance to speak directly with students about what bringing our bus network back into public hands will mean for them and their local communities.

An important day for St Helens and the start of a better-connected region for everyone.

🚌 A landmark day for the Liverpool City Region.

From the first X3 journey to community celebrations in Church Square, today marked the beginning of a new era for buses in the Liverpool City Region.

Public control of the bus network began in St Helens today, bringing a range of improvements for passengers, including:

🟡 More frequent journeys between St Helens town centre and Newton-le-Willows
⚫ Later evening and weekend services to Widnes
🟡 Two-hourly services increased to hourly
⚫ A brand new express link to Liverpool John Lennon Airport

These are just some of the changes designed to make bus travel more reliable, convenient and better connected for local communities. 🚌

🎉 The journey begins...

The new X3 service has just departed from St Helens bus depot, marking the start of a new era for buses in the Liverpool City Region. From today, the St Helens bus network is back under public control, putting passengers at the heart of the network.

This is the first step towards a more reliable, integrated and accountable bus service for local communities.

| 🚌 The first of 560+ new £150m UK-built, low-emission buses are ready to hit the streets, starting tomorrow in St Helens.

Along with 108 electric buses, £500m train fleet and a brand-new Mersey Ferry, we are completely modernising our transport fleet—the only region in the country to do this.

The new buses for our region are packed passenger-first features like USB charging, more comfortable seats and better accessibility.
