Joan and Jim Stones, Leigh’s local and friendly bus operator from 1986 to 2020, with little mascot Alex Murphy in the windscreen. Friday morning 14th May 1971 ready to leave Bangor Fold, Leigh for Wembley!

On their way to pick up Wilf Richardson’s party of 51 at The Railway Hotel, Findlay Street, Leigh for a long Wembley weekend! They had been going to Wembley for many years and it was often said that ‘We’re going until Leigh get there!’

Back then, 1971 at 10am Friday morning - Railway Hotel to the County Hotel near Euston Station - 3 nights B&B accommodation, coach to Wembley on Saturday, ticket to the match, excursion on Sunday, return on Monday - and all it cost per person was £25 / you’d be lucky to get 8 coffees for that today!!!

We don’t think anyone expected Leigh to win but that all changed when they walked onto the pitch with such confidence!

An amazing weekend with very fond memories. Later in 1972, we couldn’t even fill a minibus!

Good luck Leigh Leopards on Saturday. Everything crossed 🤞🏻!!!

50 years ago today!!!

15th May 1971 - A year to remember

Jim and Joan ready to pick up Wilf Richardson and 50 supporters at The Railway in Findlay Street for a long weekend in London to see Leigh thrash Leeds. See the Alex Murphy rag doll on the dash !! Fond memories !!

The 4 day jolly including 3 nights accommodation at the County Hotel near Euston Station, coach travel, Wembley ticket and Sunday excursion cost only £25 per head !!

If anyone is interested the coach is a 6 wheeler, twin steer, Bedford VAL with a Leyland 400 engine and Plaxton Panorama body. New to Kenyon's of Bolton in 1967. We bought it in 1971. It was a dream to drive but a nightmare to maintain the steering !!

Jim and Joan very sad to say goodbye to our old cherished DAB Leyland Tiger Cub. Hopefully she will be in a museum shortly for all you lovely enthusiasts to go and see. Stay safe everyone. 🙂🙂🙂
