Something a bit different today as ‘Dora’ is out on the Works Train. While the gang crack on with track work, the Works Train is collecting up surplus materials from April’s Civil Week at Keighley.

Saturday and Sunday saw the gang out working at Keighley. The weekend started with the Works Train failing, meaning the tidying-up jobs that required the Fassi wagon couldn’t be completed. Despite this, we still managed to start boxing in the sleepers on the newly laid track, as well as rail drilling and fishplating the new lengths of rail installed into the headshunt. We also slewed the headshunt over so it was back in alignment.

All in all, a busy weekend for the gang, with the work at Keighley progressing well.

Last night saw the first of our new Friday night working sessions. It’s a good chance for us to get through some of the smaller jobs in our work programme.

Last night saw us working on Bridge 27, carrying out a bearing clean before moving on to clear catchpits at Ainley Falls and Dingly Dell, which are two drainage channels we installed into the banking at Haworth and Damems. We also carried out some ballast regulation at Haworth.

Like what you see and want to come and help?

We are always on the lookout for new members to join the gang, so if you like the look of what we do and fancy giving it a go yourself, why not sign up as a volunteer by following: kwvr.co.uk/support/volunteer/

We have a wide range of people in the gang, from track workers from Network Rail to office workers, so no previous experience is required.

We meet every other weekend, Thursdays and on some additional midweek evenings during the summer to carry out a range of jobs including track maintenance, drainage work, and fence building.

We hope to see you soon.

60 Years of Civil Week

Last week marked our 60th Civil Week on the railway.

Civil Week is an annual event for our civil gang, during which we take full possession of the railway to carry out heavy track maintenance and larger projects, with complete control of the Railway.

Our first Civil Week took place in 1966, when the gang renewed Mytholmes Curve using rail recovered from the GN line. Over the years, we have carried out numerous renewals, as well as drainage works along with major projects such as Bridge 11 in 2020 and Bridge 27 in 2024.

Tonight the railway was handed back after a week-long civils week, which has seen the track from the end of Platform 3 to the west crossover renewed, as well as a section of the headshunt.

A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers who have given up their time this week to come down and help with the works. There are still some jobs to do, but these will be completed over the next couple of working weeks.

Some of today’s efforts at Keighley. We’re currently screwing down the track from Platform 3 to the west crossover. before an afternoon of ballast dropping and robelling for the gang.

The headshunt is starting to come together, but the main priority is the Platform 3 track, as the headshunt can be fettled over the next couple of working weekends.

Day 3 of civil weeks, The track bed has been compacted, and the first layer of fresh ballast has been laid. At both sites in Keighley, sleepers and rails have now been reinstalled.

While work was ongoing in Keighley, the Class 14 and Fassi wagon were used to remove scrap sleepers to storage on GN Straight, as well as transporting scrap rail to Oakworth.
