Moving with a baby or toddler? Plan around the things your family needs every day 👶📦
A little preparation can make moving day easier. Here’s what to think about before the boxes are packed:

🕒 Loading times
Tell your move coordinator about your child’s usual nap and feeding times. Loading can take several hours, so discuss a suitable schedule in advance.
🛏️ Pushchair and cot
If you’ll need them before the removals vehicle arrives, keep them with you or arrange an alternative. Otherwise, ask whether they can be loaded last and unloaded first, and clearly mark them on your inventory.
🚗 Car seats and baby equipment
Pushchairs, baby baths and highchairs can take up more space than you expect. Include them in your pre-move survey so they’re accounted for in the quote. Keep any car seat needed for your journey out of the shipment.
🧳 Your travel bag
Pack nappies, wipes, feeding supplies, spare clothes, any medication and a favourite comfort toy. Keep enough essentials with you for the journey and the first few days in your new home.
🚙 The journey
Allow plenty of time for feeding, changing and rest stops. If you’re driving, follow the car seat manufacturer’s guidance on how long your baby should remain in the seat.

It’s 8 am. The removals truck arrives. There’s nowhere to park. Cue the last-minute phone calls. 🚛
Moving to Paris, Barcelona, Brussels or Amsterdam? Plan where the truck will stop before moving day.
A space outside your building might look suitable, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a removals vehicle can legally use it. Depending on the address and vehicle, parking arrangements or access permits may be needed.
Without the right arrangements, you could face delays, a longer carrying distance or additional costs.

Before your move, check:

📍 Where can the truck legally stop for loading or unloading?
📍 Does a parking space need to be reserved?
📍 Are there vehicle size, weight or access restrictions?
📍 Will you need permission for an external furniture lift?
📍 Who will arrange any permits, and how far in advance?

The rules vary by city - and sometimes by street. A loading bay or a resident’s parking permit may not cover what your move requires.

Heading back to Poland, Germany, France or Belgium after studying in the UK? Your belongings may qualify for customs duty relief 🎓📦
It isn’t automatic, so check your eligibility and prepare the paperwork before moving day.

The main conditions generally include:
• Your normal place of residence was outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months.
• You’re transferring your normal place of residence to an EU country.
• You’ve had and used the belongings for at least six months before leaving your former home, and will continue using them for the same purpose.

Studying in the UK doesn’t automatically mean you qualify. You’ll need evidence of where you normally lived.

Documents worth preparing include:
📄 UK tenancy agreements or student accommodation contracts covering the relevant period.
📄 Evidence of your new home in the destination country.
📄 University documents confirming your study dates.
📄 An inventory of the belongings you’re moving, plus receipts or other evidence of ownership and use where requested.

The forms and supporting documents depend on your destination and circumstances.

These items may need additional insurance, specialist packing or extra paperwork. Let us know about them when requesting your quote, so we can plan ahead.

🍷 Fine w**e
Alcohol has its own customs and excise rules. Don’t assume your collection will qualify for the same relief as your other household belongings. The requirements need to be checked for your destination.

🖼️ Fine art
Paintings and sculptures may need custom-built crates or other specialist protection. Check that their declared value and insurance cover are appropriate, and whether an export licence is required.

🕰️ Antiques
Depending on an item’s age, value and destination, an export licence may be needed. Arrange any required documents before the move to help avoid delays.

Standard cover may not be enough for high-value belongings. Check the policy limits and let us know if you need additional protection.

Why do removal companies ask about cubic metres? 📦

When planning an international move, how much space your belongings take up is a key part of the quote.

A sofa can weigh less than a small, heavy item while taking up much more room in the vehicle. That’s why the weight alone doesn’t tell us the size of your move.

What does this mean for you?

• Large, lightweight items still take up valuable space.
• Dismantling suitable furniture can reduce the space it needs.
• Showing us everything you plan to move helps us prepare an accurate quote.

Volume matters, but it isn’t the only factor. The route, access to both properties, packing services and any items requiring special handling also affect the final price.

Before you leave your place, pack one box that stays close to you throughout the move.
It’s the last box you pack - and the first one you open when you arrive.

Your first-open box should include the essentials you’ll need before everything else is unpacked:
– phone chargers + an extension lead,
– toothbrushes,
– a change of clothes for the next 2–3 days,
– essential medication,
– important documents, such as passports, rental agreements and insurance papers,
– some cash in the local currency.

This box should travel with you or stay easily accessible, not disappear somewhere at the back of the load.
It’s a small thing, but after a long moving day, having everything you need in one place makes a huge difference.

Before the moving team starts loading your belongings, take a few photos 📸

Not because you should expect something to go wrong. Quite the opposite. It’s simply a smart way to keep your own record of the condition of your belongings before the move.

Take photos of:
– larger furniture from different angles
– electronics, including screens, backs and cables
– mirrors, artwork and frames
– valuable or sentimental items travelling with us
– numbered boxes once everything is packed

Your phone will usually keep the date and other details in the file metadata, so you automatically have a clear record from before moving day.

At JCL, we also prepare a detailed inventory for every move, so your photos work alongside our documentation.

And while we take every step to make sure your belongings are handled carefully from collection to delivery, having your own photos gives you that extra bit of reassurance.

A lot of people assume their car can simply travel with the rest of their belongings. In reality, moving a vehicle from the UK to the EU involves a separate customs process 🤔

👉🏻 For the UK export side, you’ll need to make sure the vehicle paperwork is sorted before the move, including the relevant DVLA and export formalities.

👉🏻 Once the car arrives in the EU, the rules depend on the country you’re moving to. Each country has its own requirements and deadlines for registering a UK vehicle locally.

👉🏻 One important thing to keep in mind: if you’re applying for customs relief as part of your move, your car will usually need to have been owned and used by you for at least 6 months before relocating.

We can coordinate the export documentation for your vehicle and, where possible, transport your car together with your household belongings.

The key is planning it in advance so all the paperwork is ready before moving day ✅

The inventory is not paperwork for us 🔽
It's protection for you. Every item that leaves your property goes onto a numbered inventory - what it is, what condition it was in, which box it's in.
👉🏻 You receive a copy before the van closes.
This document does three things: At customs, it's the basis for your import declaration. Without a detailed inventory, customs officers can't assess your Transfer of Residence Relief application correctly.
For insurance, it's your evidence. If a claim is made for damage or loss, the inventory is the record of what left your property. At delivery, it's your checklist.
Any discrepancy is documented at that point - not a week later.

Moving to Catalonia is not the same as moving to Spain 💡
Administratively, you're still registering with Spanish authorities -
empadronamiento, NIE, Seguridad Social. But Catalonia has a strong
regional identity, and practical things reflect that: some local councils operate primarily in Catalan, and correspondence from regional bodies often comes in Catalan first ✅

Logistically, Barcelona deserves specific mention. The old town has streets too narrow for a standard removal lorry. Many buildings require prior notification to neighbours and sometimes council permits for a crane or lift. The coastal areas -
Sitges, Lloret de Mar, Roses - are more accessible but have their
own seasonal restrictions.
None of this is insurmountable. It just needs to be planned.
