Our CCTV cameras assisted with a recent investigation in Ebbw Vale, which sadly resulted from the death of a Tredegar man. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends. A man from Cardiff was arrested by the police and later charged with manslaughter, and he is due to be sentenced later in the month after admitting the offence at crown court.

There appears to be an unfounded perception and claims on social media that CCTV in Blaenau Gwent town centre areas no longer exists or is not working, so let’s capture a few facts:

✅ There are currently 56 Operational cameras capturing high-definition footage across six CCTV zones in Abertillery, Blaina, Brynmawr, Cwm, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar.
✅ A large number of the cameras provide a 180-degree field of vision.
✅ The town centre cameras are monitored via a service level agreement with Caerphilly County Council, who view and download footage to Gwent police upon request.
✅ The cameras are ordinarily recording 24/7, 365 days a year.
✅ All town centre cameras can be monitored by control room staff during live, ongoing police incidents and the police control room has a live link to the Caerphilly CCTV control room.
✅ From April 2025 until March 2026, we have provided police with 93 evidential downloads, and our town centre cameras have been used in 231 incidents.

The cameras play an important part in crime prevention, detection and providing reassurance to the public.

Our camera locations are reviewed annually to ensure they remain necessary, proportionate, lawful, and justifiable, for instance they are situated in high crime and anti-social behaviour hot spot locations.

As a responsible local authority our operational CCTV assists with our community safety objectives of making Blaenau Gwent a safe place to live, work and visit.
