What if we could identify road risk before a serious collision happens?⚠️

A recent road-safety pilot involving Leeds City Council explored how connected vehicle data, AI-powered video analysis and road-safety engineering could be used to identify locations where drivers were repeatedly experiencing difficulties – including some that had not yet become high-profile collision sites.

The project relates to identifying risks on the road network, but the principle raises an important question for businesses too:

Why wait for an incident before looking at driver risk?

For organisations whose employees drive for work, proactive assessment can help identify areas where additional support or development may be needed before problems escalate.

BLT Driver Training’s practical Driving Assessments evaluate a driver’s competence and risk profile and identify any further training needs, with a Driving Risk Assessment Report provided afterwards. They can support new starters, health and safety compliance and performance improvement.

Assess risk. Identify training needs. Intervene earlier.

🚕 Would you know what to do if a passenger gave you cause for concern?

Taxi and private hire drivers meet people from all walks of life every day - including children and vulnerable adults.

That means drivers can sometimes find themselves in a position to notice when something doesn’t seem right.

Our Virtual Safeguarding Course for Taxi and Private Hire Drivers helps drivers understand how to recognise, prevent and report safeguarding concerns, including abuse, exploitation and neglect.

Delivered live via Zoom, the CPD Certified course uses discussion, scenarios and real-world examples to help drivers understand both their responsibilities and the steps they can take when concerns arise.

Because safeguarding isn’t simply about meeting a requirement. It’s about helping to protect the people who place their trust in you.

Not every disability is visible - and not every passenger will need the same support.

For taxi and private hire drivers, providing a professional service means being able to support passengers with a wide range of needs confidently, respectfully and safely.

BLT Driver Training’s Disability Awareness course helps drivers develop a better understanding of both visible and hidden disabilities and their responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010.

The live virtual course explores how drivers can provide appropriate support while helping passengers feel respected, comfortable and confident throughout their journey.

Because accessible transport isn’t simply about the vehicle, it’s about the experience you provide too.

Helping mature drivers stay confident and safe for longer

For many people, driving is closely linked to independence, family, routine and freedom. But as we get older, changes to eyesight, health, mobility, reaction times and confidence can all have an impact behind the wheel.

Our new blog looks at why proactive support for mature drivers matters, including the latest Great Britain Road Safety Strategy 2026, our work with Rob Heard MBE and the launch of our Mature Drivers Confidence Builder Course.

The course is a relaxed, reassuring and supportive 60-minute, one-to-one on-road session for drivers aged 60+, delivered by a specially trained DVSA Approved Driving Instructor.

Whether you’re looking for reassurance for yourself or have started thinking about a parent or loved one’s confidence behind the wheel, the course offers a positive and supportive next step.

Been away? The rules don’t take a holiday✈️

You’ve landed, collected your bags and you’re ready to head home - but are you safe to get behind the wheel?

Merseyside Police has become the first force in the UK to deploy new evidential roadside alcohol-testing technology, as part of an operation targeting drink-driving among returning holidaymakers.

The campaign highlights an important summer road-safety message: alcohol consumed before a flight or while travelling home still counts when you get behind the wheel.

If you’re driving home from the airport, plan ahead.

- Think about who is driving before you travel
- Be mindful of alcohol during your journey home
- If there’s any doubt, leave the keys alone and arrange another way home

A holiday might be over, but getting home safely is still part of the journey.

Been away? The rules don’t take a holiday.

Would you drive in flip-flops or sliders? 🩴

New research highlighted by Road Safety GB found that 35% of motorists surveyed had driven in loose-fitting or open-backed footwear during June, rising to 42% among drivers aged 17-29.

It might seem like a small detail, particularly on a quick summer journey, but what you wear behind the wheel matters.

Rule 97 of the Highway Code says drivers should make sure their clothing and footwear do not prevent them from using the vehicle controls correctly.

So, before heading out in the sunshine, take a second to think about what’s on your feet.

Enjoy the summer.
Stay comfortable.
Make sure you can remain fully in control.

This month’s Driving for Better Business Fleet Safety Focus is looking at one of the most fundamental parts of driver safety: seat belts.

For businesses with employees who drive for work, seat belt use shouldn’t simply be assumed. It should form part of a clear driving-for-work policy, supported by regular communication, training and expectations around compliance.

While responsibility for wearing a seat belt generally sits with the individual driver or adult passenger, fleet operators and managers still have a duty of care towards those driving for work.

Driving for Better Business encourages organisations to consider:

- Is seat belt use clearly covered in your driver policy?
- Do drivers understand when exemptions do – and don’t – apply?
- Are seat belt defects reported and repaired promptly?
- Is driver safety reinforced through training and regular reminders?

A simple habit can make a significant difference to the outcome of a collision.

At BLT Driver Training, we help organisations strengthen driver safety through practical training, assessments and professional driver development - helping businesses reduce risk and support safer driving for work.

August is National Road Victim Month.

This month provides an opportunity to remember everyone who has lost their life or been seriously injured on our roads, as well as the families, friends and communities whose lives have been changed forever.

Behind every road casualty statistic is a person - and the impact of a collision can continue long after the incident itself.

At BLT Driver Training, our work is centred on helping organisations manage road risk more proactively. Driver assessments and ongoing development can help identify unsafe habits, strengthen awareness and support better decision-making before a serious incident occurs.

While training is only one part of improving road safety, we believe every organisation has a responsibility to do what it can to protect employees and everyone who shares the road with them.

This National Road Victim Month, we remember those affected and reaffirm the importance of working towards safer roads for all. https://www.roadpeace.org/remembering-lives-lost/national-road-victim-month/
