Just an update one my earlier post about a minimum charge I’d just like to add this will not be applied to a single person who has booked me since the vehicle was licensed 7 months ago.

Also if demand were to rise the minimum charge will also be scrapped as soon as possible.

To give you an idea of current demand I’m seeing on average 2-3 enquiries a week and mostly for very small journeys.

As the weather improves I’m offering full day trips to anywhere within the Lake District national park at a fixed rate of £200 a day for a door to door service

Special rates also available for return trips to places like South Shields and Tynemouth for those who’d like a day at the coast

Depending on the size of your wheelchair I can carry between 1-3 passengers as well as a seated wheelchair user

Many thanks for your support, I am trying my best to help with this service

Unfortunately I’m going to have to make some changes 😞

I’ve been in the taxi / private hire trade for many years and it’s getting harder and harder with uber ( who I don’t think have any wheelchair accessible vehicles) now taking the biggest share of the market and little company’s like mine are folding week on week.

With the price of diesel currently being so high I spend most of my days driving an electric vehicle, which is so much cheaper to run.

When wheelchair jobs have been coming in I’ve been trying to except as many as possible then I have to switch over vehicles into the wheelchair accessible, which is diesel to complete the job.

When I take the wheelchair accessible vehicle it means another driver can’t take any more jobs ( he has not completed the wheelchair training run by the council yet) and the electric car insurance is to expensive for him to drive my electric car.

If I do a long distance job this is fine but if it’s a £5 -£10 job it’s just not economically viable.

A few firms who do have wheelchair accessible vehicles have a high minimum fare, I don’t want to do that but I can’t keep going how I am.

I pay my drivers £15/h so unfortunately I’ve had to make the decision to set this as a minimum fare as I feel it’s only fare I earn at least living wage for trying to provide this service.

All longer jobs will be unaffected and will stay at the taxi meter price as set by the council.

Please also remember my wheelchair accessible vehicle is a private hire vehicle and not a taxi so I can legally charge any price as long as I make customers aware of this before collection

I hope all this makes sense and people understand

If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate and as always please book as early as possible and I will try my best.

Unfortunately if this doesn’t work the vehicle will be for sale

Thanks for taking the time to read this

I’m starting to see a few more bookings from care homes where residents are really keen to have a change of scenery or a look out to the shops, if I could help you or anyone you know with this please get in touch.

I have also had reports of people having to spend a full day with patient transport to get to and from a medical appointment which only last 30 mins.

I’d be happy to take you to and from appointments in your own private taxi, saving you a lot of time, stress and anxiety.

As always please book as early as possible, especially for longer bookings and I’ll always try my best to accommodate.

Many thanks and please keep spreading the world of my services

Just dropped off a very satisfied customer there, as I charged her less than half the price she paid for the same journey last time.

My customer paid the standard taxi rate as set by Durham County Council and not a massively overinflated price just cause she needed a wheelchair accessible vehicle

If you need me please book as early as possle and remember I’m based just outside of Durham City Centre.

Customer price today £48

Customer price last time £100

Please use my services or unfortunately standard taxi fares for wheelchair users will become a thing of the past😞

Uber are not interested in providing WAVS and as they wipe out more small companies and operators every week the situation is only going to get worse

Please could people share this page and my website www.wheelchairaccessibletransportdurham.co.uk as unfortunately at present my wheelchair accessible vehicle is not getting enough use to make it viable :-(

Many Thanks

Due to the fact I want to spend more time in the Lake District, for a limited time only, one day a week, I can offer return day trips to Keswick for £100 to anyone in Durham city.

This would be return transport only in a standard private hire vehicle or a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to assist anyone over there, it would simply be transport only.

I can’t imagine any taxi operator has offered a deal like this before but it’s a lifestyle decision on my part so if you’d like to take advantage of this offer and get something booked in please drop me a message

Find 3 other people to share with and that’s £12.50 each way to Keswick!!

Many thanks

If anyone is looking to book transport for Christmas shopping trips from Durham City centre area to Newcastle or Metro Centre please can book in with me as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

I can cover other areas however if you have a local provider who doesn’t charge high rates they will most likely be able to offer better rates than me

Many thanks

Thanks to everyone for your support so far!

This business came about due to me working, for many years, within the taxi trade and constantly hearing how hard it is tor people to get out and about due to massive shortage of wheelchair accessible vehicles.

I spend a lot of money on a wheelchair accessible vehicle and the private hire vehicle insurance to run it, but unfortunately at present my Idea is simply not sustainable.

I’m not one to give in easily so will be here for a good while anyway but if if more people could start booking me, sharing this page and helping to spread the word about what I’m trying to do that would be very much appreciated 😊

Please remember I am based right in Durham city centre so unfortunately really short distance jobs, out of my area, will come with a minimum charge to make them viable.

Thanks again for all the support so far and please spread the word.

Please could I also ask to book as far in advance as possible as I really struggle with last minute or short notice bookings

P.S The Canny Lass company is also a fantastic small local business that might be of interest to many of you on hear so please check it out 😊

Cheers

I’ve just rescued a lady who’s battery was running low on her scooter, fitted in the back no problem with the lowered floor and ramp

I’m getting a few calls from all over the North East due to the lack of wheelchair accessible vehicles!

Unfortunately the terms of my private hire licence limit all my pick ups to start or end in County Durham.

If anyone is outside of County Durham I can still help however unfortunately you would need to book me from a start or end point within the county.

If you wanted to have a day in say the Lake District but lived in Sunderland I would charge 1p a mile from Durham to your pick up point then it would be the standard fare or agreed price from there.

I really hope this makes sense, but unfortunately it’s the only way a small operator like me can stay within the law

Many thanks

Stuart
