Great news for sustainable transport in the National Park 👏
We welcome the announcement from Stirling Council confirming plans for a year-round Trossachs Explorer bus service. This is a really positive step forward in improving access to some of Scotland’s most popular visitor destinations while helping reduce congestion and environmental impact.
We’ve been pleased to support the development of the Trossachs Explorer to date and it’s fantastic to see the service continuing to grow.
🚍 Stirling Council has agreed to take over the operation of the Trossachs Explorer bus service on a two-year pilot, starting this summer.
Following feedback from partners and communities, the new service will be expanded to run all-year round, extending beyond the summer months as provided by previous pilots in 2024/25 by Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority.
It will operate on a similar route to the previous service, providing a vital public transport connection for rural communities between Callander and Aberfoyle, as well as providing visitors with access to key tourist destinations in the Trossachs, such as, Loch Venachar, Ben A’an and Loch Katrine Pier.
The service will operate from Monday to Sunday, with four return journeys per day, and it will support connections to commercial services such as the 59 service between Stirling and Callander and the X10A on to Balfron and Glasgow.
It will be modelled on the current C60 service and the recently launched C61 and C62 services that are improving public transport connections between many of Stirling’s rural communities. Timetables and more details about the service will be shared before it starts.
The Trossachs Explorer was commissioned by the National Park Authority over the past two years, starting in the summer of 2024.
The new bus service proved popular, with a 15% increase in passenger numbers in year two from year one, and it was positively received by local residents and visitors who used it for a wide variety of purposes, from walking and hiking to getting to work and reaching onward connections.
Introducing a new sustainable transport option also delivered wider social and environmental benefits to this part of the National Park and the Stirling Council area.
The council will continue working closely with the National Park Authority, communities and other key stakeholders to build on the service’s initial success and to ensure it meets the needs of communities and visitors.
